We don't live at the farm but go there every couple of days and have neighbors that help tend and keep an eye on my chicks and ducks. We do spend most weekends there. So far, I've only lost one drake. Probably a predator, as I lost several of my self-free-ranging chickens, but the drakes are surprisingly self sufficient. We have a cove in one area of the pond, covered with brush, with 2 entrance/exits, and they usually sleep out on the water. Have an auto feeder that spits feed several times each day. They seem to love it. Freezer camp is an option, and I have someone that wants 2 for that purpose, but as long as they seem to be able to thrive and be happy, I will likely just let them enjoy it.

That is really interesting! We are farm-hunting and currently looking at a new property :fl that has a large pond out front. While it sounds like there are too many predators in the area to risk the breeding stock I hope to raise, it might be an interesting experiment to try having the excess drakes on the pond. They would provide great eye candy without requiring too much effort and since the pond is about an acre, I would assume that quite a few drakes could live on it without damaging it.

Oh, and the property is the last house on a very quiet dead-end street, so I just love the idea of having some free range birds wandering around and if I only had extra drakes (especially ones bound for the freezer) on the pond, it wouldn't even be much of a risk. Definitely something to consider!

My drakes: Oliver, our Fawn and White Indian Runner drake. He is the top drake, and probably the smartest.
More ducky burlesque!

What a beautiful boy! I really want to get some Runners someday.
Nyasa, our Mallard drake. He has been in eclipse since we got a good camera. :D
His colors are lovely!!
Snuggles, our Wood Duck drake. Snuggles isn't really into protecting the flock, he's only interested in showing off to our Khaki Campbell hen, Mildred.
What a gorgeous duck! And that is so funny that he shows off for your Khaki Campbell.

Here's a few of my drakes!
