That isn't to say that you can't have turkeys. Keep them wormed regularly, and unless they have to free range I have heard of folks regularly working lime into the soil where the turkeys are (I think it helps keep the earth worms away). That and keep some Metronidazole (fish zole) on hand just in case you see symptoms.

Oh noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! I am so very sorry.

Ok Frosty, so what do we do to protect our turkeys in the future and if they get it, what do we give them? Please teach me. I hope my Tom doesn't have black head. I'm scared now.

Where can I get the Metronidazole (fish zole) from? I have to get some ASAP. I'm still trying to work on my Tom. He still has a crooked neck but no other symptoms. Where can I get the Vitamin E Frosty?

So very sorry. I know it's hard, but don't give up. There are things you can do to help lessen the risks for turkeys. Keep them in a separate coop from other fowl when not free ranging. Worm all fowl with Safe guard liquid goat wormer 3 cc per gallon of water or 1 cc to every 10 lbs of bird. Safe guard helps to kill off one of the causes of Black head, this helps as a preventative. Know what the symptoms are:

Listlessness
droopy wings
picking at food but not eating really
drinking more water
sulfur yellow poo
weight loss
darkening around the skin on face......

Keep fish zole on hand to treat as you see fit. Once in a while I have a turkey come down with it. As soon as I recognize the symptoms, they get the treatment for 5 days. I've not had the same turkey have it twice.....

Hope you try again, I know it hurts.................

Jeffers Pet carries Fish zole in the fish section online, as well as some pet stores. 1, 250 mg pill 2 x daily for 5 days per adult turkey.

Wry neck - give vitamin E gel caps that contain Selenium, but not too much as it can be hazardous to over dose. Chickens get 1 large gelcap squeezed into mouth 2 x daily... so a turkey i'd double it. Also there is a paste I've had luck with for goats, it's orange and has both vitamin E & Selenium in it and it's only like $6 a tube. Use a pea size drop per chicken, so about a small marble for adult turkey.....

Human kind is fine. They don't sell a turkey kind

You can put it on a food that he likes (bread, grapes...) and just give it to him that way. Like chickenzoo said, fish zole can be found in some pet stores (in the fish section) or ordered on line. And like I mentioned earlier, if they are kept in a pen you can work lime into the soil and definately worm regularly. I am not sure that Tom has it, though. What ever he has has been there too long and he is still alive. If you want to try treating him with the fish zole, it is an antibiotic, amebicide, and antiprotozoal. I think it's a case of won't hurt, might help.

well i am not one to give up. but 300.00 dollars in turkeys and gas to get them and all i have left is one wonderful tom. and to know this could have been treated realy sucks. they are doing more testing on the hen, but at first opening her up they saw signs of blackhead. i have safeguard here, tommy boy is getting a dose in the am, going to pet store and get some fish zole, and sat travelling 2 and half hours into kentucky for three 10 month old hens i just found on craigslist. there goes another 100.00 and i am going to lime,7 dust, and permithrin spray there isloation pen. top bottom sides. i new she was sick i just didnt know what to do. right now tom is in with the chickens and guineas. only to roost, there are free during daylight hrs.thanks all, gobble gobble

Yes, human gel caps are fine. for turkeys, get the big ones. Vitamin E is good for many types of injurys. I raise Silkie chickens, and they are very prone to wry neck. Wry neck can reoccur at any age, but often lasts shorter with treatment. I had a baby Poult that developed a twisted neck and only could look over her back. i moved her by herself and placed the cage so she could see the others in the opposite cage but she had to try and straighten her neck to see them. this along with vitamin E and Poultry Nutri drench vitamins helped her become normal again.

If he keeps getting a respiratory infection, clean out his area with bleach, keep dust free bedding down, and give Tylan 200 or LA 200 injected just under skin at back of base of neck or down throat. If it keeps happening I'd ask my Dept of Ag to do a throat swab and see what they could tell you.

Frosty, you were reading my mind. I was just about to post to say that if he had anything, he would be dead now. He has been this way going on 16 days and he is still walking around, eating, drinking, etc. I'm glad you said that he may not have it.

Ok, so, I will be picking up the Vitamin E gel caps that contain Selenium & Metronidazole (fish zole) from the pet stores and lime. Thanks everyone.

ETA: And will also be picking up Safe guard liquid goat wormer.
