Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

It always give me the chills when I read what you went through. I haven't heard of anybody who devoted so much of her time and tried her best to save them.

A month ago only one chick hatched from my shipped eggs and I believe her feet feathering are not that nice. Would you agree? When you cull at a such young age, do you cull for feet feathering as well or wait until they mature more?

The best time to get a good look at future feathering is the day after hatch. For some reason chicks pick off their foot feathers or their neighbors feathers when they are young. If you look real close you can usually see where a feather used to be. Yes, I do cull for zero, one or two feathers on middle toe. They go in the $5 bin for craigslist. :)

Would you breed a bird that had no feathers on the middle toe if the birds was nice in all other ways?
No feathers on middle toe is a DQ, right?

I actually have a hen like this, no feathers on the middle toe...I bred her to a white roo with HEAVY foot feathering. Their chick is 8 wks and has super feathering.

You are so kind!
It's so scary when something like this happens. I'm sorry your babies didn't all make it, Peep seems to be fine now luckily!
I am very glad to hear that the baby is ok.
