Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

There is an international treaty to protect migratory birds, which basically includes just about every bird that is native to an area (at some point during its life). So, European starlings are not protected in America (to include both US and Canada, although obviously the specific laws and protected lists are country specific :D), but probably are in Europe. The treaty goes back to the late 1800's when taxidermied birds in hats, along with exotic feathers were so stylish that they nearly caused the extinction of a number of species.

I'm not so sure it is the Coopers Hawk that keeps the Red Tail away but rather the presence of the Cooper that lets me know the Red Tail isn't around!

(It's all a learning curve .... when the Coopers Hawk doesn't show up, I'm suspicious.)

Hi all..well we finished our 2012 show season ..Cody did real well with JR Champion Featherleg with Buttons his white hen,,,he also got RB with his black hen...there were 20 silkies there in JR...18 were his but we met and hopefully made a few more silkie enthusiasts...got to chat with Jenny Linton who has Hilltop silkies and also the KD flock she brought in these two white boys who were just unreal..I was drooling they were just so pretty...also i made a little 4her girls day when i brought her a blue cockerel...i gave her a deal and she met me at the door this morning when i came in with her allowance money in hand to buy her blue silkie....i believe he will be in the house a lot this winter...lol....to see a childs face light up like that makes me feel so happy...silkies are really magical little birds that steal your heart! I need to remember how to post pics here so I can show you a Hilltop boy and of course Buttons. I was also looking at that cooper hawk we had a falcon of some sort who got brave like that but the layer flock is too big for him and finally after a week of sitting in the trees and swooping down he got fed up with my bird chasing dogs and left. Bald Eagles scare me a lot more and we had one fly thru a month ago.

More pics of my baby girl

anyone think she could be a dark splash? That would be awesome! She's from a BBS pen, as long as this means blue/black/splash, that's how I understand it

Question: how many times can I collect from a male each day?
I have been able to collect up to twice a day-- but you have to wait several hours-- do morning and evening. I haven't really had the best of luck with twice a day, either. You might get nothing on that 2nd try. But you never know-- they are all different. Best results are once a day. I just use a plastic spoon. I sit on a stool, put his head down and hold his feet up--- not super high, but enough so I can stroke his back with my left hand, and hold his legs with my right and I keep the spoon in my right hand too. It takes some coordination, but you'll get there. I put his head on my left side. If you are right handed, that will work best.

This is a blue. However, if it starts to develop very dark spots on it... then it's a splash.

This is one of my Splash girls. Lots of very dark spots all over the bird.
