The waiting is driving me crazy... So I finished the brooder
Lol...yes, the nesting instinct carries over even when we aren't pregnant. Last night I worked on my mama's heating pad and have 1st aid/hatching kit put together. I'm paranoid abt this hatch, so they have a brand new brooder & new heating pad. I made a new water bottle (nipples in a juice bottle) and a feeder out of a plastic container with small funnels cut & set into each side. Haven't put food in it yet to try it out, but think of those 5 gal feeders with pvc pipe in them. Anything I can think of to prevent cross contamination.
I had a lot of help from heavy hitters in this group, and it was determined that last hatch had mushy chick. Novice here had never heard of it, but each death was more horrifying than the last, starting at hatch and ending 7 days later.
They were shipped eggs, 1 was broken on arrival, 2 had hairline cracks I didn't catch until they started weeping in incubator.
I don't know if that caused the infection or something else. I had keets dead in their shell before and after internal pipping, keets that died after assisted hatching, and four glorious little keets that seemed perfectly healthy-until they weren't.
Not having a pity party, just explaining my paranoia. It gave me tremendous respect for nurses dealing with the past 2 years. Not to make light of it, but I kind of understand what they go through: after awhile, you just don't want to walk in the room to check.
So that's the explanation for my paranoia. But that's not happening again, and if it does, @CluckNDoodle has prepped me for what to do. She'd still probably get frantic messages. Lol.:barnie
