Silkie thread!

I have a mixed bunch of chickens I am getting ready to put in new poop board and lower roosts . But as of yet my silkies will not go on a roost what should I do. They just starting to lay they sleep under the bigger girls and are pooped on all night and not only do they lay in everyone else poop they sleep in their own.and are now laying their eggs there to. they will not even jump 2inches to go in the nesting boxes which I show them every day after I put their fresh egg in it. HELP.I also made them a little roost like I saw on amazon they rather lay in ****.

Silkies are a breed unlike any other. My Silkies have slept in a nestbox since day 1. If your Silkies are insisting on sleeping on the floor bedding in the same spot, set a covered cat litter box with straw or shavings inside for them to sleep inside and that way the girls above can't poop on the Silkies. This is something that usually you can't break a Silkie. They love to sleep in a pile on a floor or nestbox. We have to clean the Silkie nestbox every day but that's part of being a chicken owner. To me Silkie hens are a breed behaviorally different from other chickens and EE and Ameraucana hens are behaviorally different from other breeds too - spookier, kookier, jittery, jumpy, skittish, wary, alert but very sweet non-combative temperaments where they prefer to flee rather than fight. Knowing the behavior of the breeds you choose for the backyard can be a great help in understanding why certain birds behave the way they do.

hey everyone, i was wondering how many time should my silkie drink, right now i don't know how many time she drinks a day, but when i get home from school i let out my big chickens and she than drinks a lot. is this a bad thing or should i go and get another water jug? i do think she might be going during the day.
the poor thing is all alone now but it looks like shes doing well, hopefully we are going best friends now, because before they both didn't like me.

It's suprising just how much chickens drink. Just be sure that she access to plenty of clean , fresh water . :)
For younger birds I put a rock or brick in the bottom to prevent drowning.

At this dinosaur stage I wouldn't keep either one - LOL! Give them a chance to feather out until you see the one you really like. I had a roo for several months before re-homing him and he was gorgeous so I had no problems re-homing him.

They're 3 months old and they both crow it's so funny, and I might wait 2 more months and see what happens, but thanks for your suggestion

Wow! Crowing already! My boy was almost 8 months before we heard his crow and then he would never stop LOL! I wanted to keep him but he simply was too rambunctious and loud. He wanted to mate the Leghorn but he couldn't catch up to her long running legs! Chickens are a hoot!

well looks like i started with three silkies and now only have one, one just passed last night due to the dual purpose birds that's had pecked his head and drew blood, but i think his death was because of brain damage. (the other one died on day 7 and this one was 95 days old.)
i am very worried about the other silkie, i think i am going make a new pen in the coop so its not with the other ones. will its stress out and die to?
i know i am getting 3 more silkies in march
They really don't like to be alone, but if you can fix it so she/he can at least see the other chickens then she should be ok till you can get another.

Some Silkies roost Most do not, Out of the 9 I have 4 like to roost the others do not. just give them a covered place to roost on the floor or you could raise the sleeping area about 3 - 4 inches off the floor if u don't want them there. But really anything higher is just too intimidating to them I think...
