Silkie thread!

I have an egg under my Silkie right now . The first egg hatched wednesday morning and I expected this one today. I checked on the egg and it seems to be zipping? in a circle on the bottom part instead of around the shell. The shell is still stuck on the membrane but in bits like of you tapped an egg to break it but it just wont break and she seems stuck.:( I took a warm wet towel to peel off some of the shell with tweezers without ripping the membrane. I could hear the chick peeping and see the membrane moving from her breathing. She made a pip through the membrane, its about the size of a pin hole.she pipped yesterday morning when I checked. Should I assist? Also posting in raising baby chicks. TIA! <3

I would assist

I would assist but it's really up to you

Thank you!!! Does it seem like she's in the wrong position? How would you assist? I'm thinking I have to open her pip hole a little more. Is that okay to do and then slip her back under mama?

It's always difficult to know when to assist . If the chick has pipped and is breathing it should be fine. It can take anywhere from 24-48 hours from pip to zip.
This link of @Sally Sunshine is one that all prospective hatchers should keep bookmarked as a reference/ guide. :)

Thank you!!! Thanks so much for the link. I checked again and her little pip hole was sealed. Like it sealed itself. Maybe it was my taking shell pieces off with the warm towel. I opened it again, a little bigger with tweezers, for her to breathe and she started to peep louder and felt like she was fighting or kicking, I tried to put the egg in a better position under mamma to get out easily. I hope it works. This is our first time. I hope I didn't mess up.:(

Edit to say. I saw her beak before i opened the pip hole a little more. She seemed to be working at the same spots in a circular motion under rather than around and the membrane wasn't giving. I hope she didn't accidentally hit a blood vessel. :/

My beautiful new boy arrived at the post office today! Along with two little chicks.

Any name suggestions for the big guy?

With our Partridge boy we wanted to be silly and give him a dog's name like "Spot" or "Rufus" or "Bullet" but he had a voice that sounded like a Trumpeter Swan so we named him "Trumpet." Give your boy a chance to show his personality and a personality name will come to you!

x2 exactly and once they start

"zipping that should go fairly quick in less than an hour" never confuse zipping with a pip!

I started a new thread in my signature below, anyone is welcome to pop in and out!

Seriously, I have a fox my dad trapped years ago, and the coloring is just as beautiful! I think he is surely Foxy! and the bunny tail to boot! I would love to see him from behind... I know I have been called sally silly sunshine many times, but we all have a thing for chicken butts dont we???

if you end up breeding him and sell eggs, I would LOVE to be on your list! HarmonyAnn would be so surprised when they pop out of the shells! OMG did I just say that, another breed!!! silkies again!!! Reds are my love!!! this is your fault
