Silkie thread!

I heard its normal In silkies??

Silkie boys can be any age when they start to crow. Our boy was with his sister and never crowed until we added a Leghorn.

The Leghorn pullet was surprisingly tame as she was socialized a lot from the same breeder we obtained our two Partridge Silkies. The Leghorn was a gentle alpha for 3 years but after her 3rd year molt she got aggressive and we re-homed her into an egg-layer flock.

Because Silkies can sustain injuries easily from pecks on their head we have ceased having heavier dual-purpose or egg-layer breeds. The only breeds we have with our Silkies now are the gentle non-combative Ameraucana and an agile graceful Breda. All our breeds either have crests, beards, muffs, vulture hocks, or feathered legs/toes - these breeds have been coincidentally gentle breeds for us so we re-homed all our straight-comb dominant layer breeds. My preference is for gentle peaceful birds over having a group of surly egg-layers. Besides, we have discovered over the years that Silkies are actually quite good layers in spite of having a reputation of broodiness.

My beautiful new boy arrived at the post office today! Along with two little chicks.

Any name suggestions for the big guy?

I don't have a name suggestion (maybe something with fire in it?) but I'm so stinkin' jealous! What a great red color. What are you going to breed him with? Come spring I may be begging you for overnighted eggs! What are the little guys going to be? The dark one looks red partridge. What's the light one?

Crowley, the 2 littles could be Samantha and Deana.

I love Samantha and Deanna (I've got multiple Deans and Sams and Cas' but none with the female versions!!) but I think I'm gonna pass on Crowley. I had a very nasty roo a while back named Crowley... he was terrible! I wish I'd saved the name for a bird I liked better, lol, now it just reminds me of him.

 :love THEY ARE STUNNING.

Well, he is definitely a cutie!

For now he's going to be used in my LF Sex-Linked Silkie project. He's the first of the stock I've gathered. He'll be bred to Cochins, at least Buff and hopefully LF Red if I can find some, and of course Cuckoo Silkies to produce bantam Sex-Links. While my eventual goal is to create both Red and Cuckoo LF lines, I plan on keeping some of the bantam stock around since I know plenty of people would love the original bantam form as well! I'd love to breed him with Red and Red Partridge Silkies as well to create pure-colored offspring, but that all hinges on me finding some for sale! Both varieties seem very rare.

Not sure what the babies are, except that they are varying shades of partridge. I agree the dark one does have a reddish cast, fingers crossed for it to be RP!
