It was probably one if the hardest losses I’ve had to deal with.
He began having seizures but would get better and then worse again. After having the vet come by a few times, we made the decision to have him euthanized.
Afterwards, the necropsy showed that he was born with only one kidney and the other was atrophied. So there was really nothing we could do. The toxins just kept building up in his body since his kidney couldn’t properly filter. He was negative for any of the major diseases like mareks, which made me feel a little relieved.
But I was so stressed and depressed for days afterwards.
It’s crazy how much you can love a little chicken!

Seriously....I only don't like that I cannot find pullets near me.
Everything is straight run and I cannot have a rooster.
Good broody birds are a blessing. None of my birds get to roam the yard due to year round hawks. Not worried about them getting eaten since I don't let mine out.

I know, silkies are so hard to sex.
In the beginning I had almost no idea until they crowed. But now, years in I think I’ve finally mastered it!
At least with my own stock, I can tell by a few months.
Wow ! Just wow ! A guy goes away to see his grandson play baseball, and comes back to find that he is 15 pages behind and no chance to catch up.
My fair bird was a bantam blue cochin names Henny-Penny-My-Sweet-Chicken, Jenny-Penny for short(it was my grandpa's idea of a name, not mine!). She helped me become Juinior Grand Poultry Champion at the Western Idaho Fair. The next year on the 4th of July, I thought she was being picked on top much, so I put her in a small kennel in the shade with a ton of water and some food. A few hours later, I checked on her and found her dead, she had tipped her water, and the early evening sun was angling right into her. Being a cochin, she was so fluffy and dehydrated and hot. I lost a best friend that day.
Moral: make SURE your chickens have water, especially in summer.
