Silky hatch-along and OdoBan on eggs experiment

Pics
You don't buy a 120 to set 120 every 3 weeks. You buy one to set 30 evey week and then hatch 30 each week in the Brinsea for a total of 120 a month. This method requires so many fewer hens. Cost savings in the long run. Math but sort of not bad as chicken math.
Yeah, that was what I was wanting to do, set 1 or 2 dozen a week, maybe one pen one week and the other the next, to help keep track of who has what genetics. But now I am needing to vaccinate upon hatching, so I'm trying to load up the incubator to not waste as much of the vaccine and help keep the cost down as much as possible. I'm mostly buying hatching eggs for my next hatch so I'll be able to load up at once, my July hatch I'm not sure how many eggs I'll have from my own chickens, it will depend on who is laying and how well. I'm hoping for a decent amount of my own silkie eggs to incubate. I'm also potentially going to get an Ameraucana that has produced show winners and create some amazing EEs and OEs to incubate in July as well.

Of the whole passel I hope to hatch, I'm hoping I can sell some and have space, and hubby's blessing, to stuff the incubator again 🤣

It makes sense with the vaccinations. I don't plan on vaccinating any. I had a hatchery vaccinate my first 100 but none since. If the vaccine protected the flock I would. After digging into it seems to only saves some from dying but not having it spread onto a property. I've tinkered with the idea of doing some custom hatching for other local farms.

I never dreamed I'd be a backyard vaccinater, but silkies chose me, and they seem to like to die... 🙄 and now I have to do crazy things to try to keep my little floofs safe and healthy. I am telling you, I have had a massive phobia of needles, it has lessened over the years, and now here I am, handling needles, using them to mix and prep the vaccine. I did have my mom come over to do the actual poke in the chicks, that worked well, she has zero needle issues, she used to be a nurse. I held the chick, she pinched the skin, I dabbed it with rubbing alcohol, she put the needle in, and I pushed the plunger. Easy peasey!

What vaccines are you using? My wife is a retied nurse. From putting needles in sick babies a few days old to the geriatrics who never knew that had gotten a shot. We have no clue to how many diseases people actually need to vaccinate for. I know of just two. The dreaded Mareks and coccidiosis. Spelling is not my strong suite but at least I know what I mean and google doesn't. :)

We are doing the first one, we're in a really heavy commercial poultry area, I spoke with the state veterinarian and they said it is really common, silkies are also very susceptible to it, so one little jab as a peeper and I'm hoping they are good to go!

We have a very large commercial broiler industry around us here. Some layers I'm told. I don't hear much in the way of disease problems here. I lost maybe 5 or 6 over time of the first 100 from somethings I didn't understand. Sudden death on a couple of them. I think internal female problems having to do with being bred to be laying machines.

I had a couple Golden Comets and I wasn't happy with their longevity, but I have some older Black Astraulorps who have been been awesome, super healthy and great layers.
