Silky hatch-along and OdoBan on eggs experiment

Pics
Usually, they will sit on them. A trick is to put one egg at a time in front of her and let her pull it in under her. If she doesn't, or she is done being broody by the time you get the eggs, there could be an issue. The nice thing about hens hatching the eggs is they take care of the babies rather than you.

When I had people asking me for chicks, it was too hard for me to take them from the hen, so I bought an incubator. And then that grew into two incubators, two temp pens, a brooder in the living room, etc.
The progression from broody hens to 2 incubators + supporting infrastructure, it's beautiful 😊

I'm sorry so many buffs didn't develop, I hope the ones that hatch are extra perfect 🥰

Interesting on the 2 Odoban quitters being early ones.

And, I love that your hubby sang to them, that's a great way to say goodbye.
Thanks, Tink. As I looked that list over, it seems odd so many buffs didn't make it, only 30% left, vs. 5 cuckoos (1 is questionable), so say 4/5 of those were way better. 2 were not fertilized and the rest never started. I know this is the risk we take with shipped eggs so I'm going to be happy with whatever I wind up with though. ❤️

I noted that with the OB eggs too. That's going to be interesting.

Good morning everyone! We are on Day 8!

Hubs and I went into a rendition of Frank Sinatra's "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow." Yeah, we're crazy! :lau

Good morning little ones. Sorry that Bob/Bobbie didn't make it. Maybe nest time. I have a white giant rooster I named Bob. He is growing back his tail feathers from a feral dog attack. He had one slight puncture wound that was not deep and he has been fully recovered. I need to rest as much as possible today. I think I over did it yesterday moving, lifting and just plain on my feet walking a lot more than usual. I think I candle Monday at the 10 day mark. Anxious to see if my White Giant x Cornish Cross eggs are developing.

Would you be able to tell if the non-turning affected any or would that be too soon? I guess if you see them moving, that'd be a sure clue they're fine! :)

Day 7!

I just finished candling.
The list is updated: Scratch outs are goners, green is good, and green with question mark I wasn't sure/dark eggs.

This isn't going quite as well as I'd hoped on the shipped eggs as we're at 61.1% looking viable thus far, and a few I kept are questionable, but not out yet.

I will note 3B @The Chick Addict egg was doing summersaults and gets the award for the most lively egg. 🎉

We say goodbye to 1B, 2B, 6B, 7B, 8B, 10B, and 12P of the shipped eggs.

In the Brinsea, we have normal eggs and some Odoban eggs. Boy did that incubator smell good!

We say goodbye to 22 (fresh quitter), 25-O, and 28-O which were early quitters.

Hubby sang Doris Day's, Que Sera Sera (whatever will be will be) before chucking them down the hill.

Yay!!!! I am so glad 3B is doing well!!!! :celebrate:yesss::clap

Can I name her Sugar Plum if she turns out to be a pullet and Damien if a cockerel?

Thank you all for your kindness in answering my questions! I see the dilemma about having the chicks from a hen. I probably would be the same way and end up keeping the chicks. So you say there's probably a time lapse between time I get the ordered eggs and her being broody? And when you order the eggs do you know what you're getting do they tell you or is it just wait and see when they hatch? I've been reading through the learning center, which has been most helpful and I want to also order that book you recommended. I have to read it underline and score it and then show it to my husband. I also see where having an incubator would probably be a whole lot more fun because I could have it in the house and watch the chicks pecked their way out! this could be a good thing
Thank you I'll keep reading

Yes, a female should already be broody once you order eggs. That way you will not waste money on eggs that will not be sat on. Depending on what you purchase, you should have a very good idea of what you are hatching. The only reason you wouldn't be is if you purchased a surprise pack or something like that. Even mix breed eggs would come with the list of the mature birds on the property. Hatching eggs with an incubator is so sooo fun. It's cute, it's entertaining, it's educational, but I wouldn't trade this sight for the world
