Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

Welcome perchie!

We get below freezing here but nothing like Alaskan. Our coop is open on one side with screening as we have more heat issues in the summer than freezing in the winter. Last winter I went with the flexible rubber pan some folks use to feed horses when the temps would drop. That way, I could break it our in the morning an usually it would be above freezing in the day so it would thaw. On the few days we stay below freezing, we just make several trips out and change the pan/water. This is obviously a southern fix.

Thanks I think I am REALLY going to like this group. actually I already do... LOL.

My place is on a teeny little corner of the Sonoran Desert. High up at about 3200 feet. That gives me about 72 hours of snow per year. And HUGE temperature swings in a 24 hour period. Well below freezing at night with winds that make the screens scream so loud you have to raise your voice to have a conversation.... Then the next day up to the middle to high seventies. My coop is open to three sides pretty much with a single wall for the prevailing winter winds.

While I dont get precipitation its still cold. Chickens dont seem to mind they go on about their chickony business as soon as the morning sky shows a little bit of light.

Hi Perchie
frow.gif

so glad you joined us. I think we really are a flock of peace loving, pretty good eggs (tho a couple of us may be a bit cracked

).

You are from the high desert? Neat! You really must post some pics that will be especially appreciated by those of us like SCG, Alaskan and myself who are in hyper drive trying to get everything done outside before it disappears under the snow for 9 months.

Thank you again for sharing the info about the Toddy pot. You just solved my hubby's problem on what to get me for Christmas (if I can wait that long)

view of my back yard from the out house. The dark horizon is the United States. The pale horizon is Mexico in Baja. Those mountains are about fifty miles away. My place is two miles from the Mexican boarder. See the gate... All solid gates hang like that here eventually... Best to have mesh or slats to let the wind through.
Oh and the below pictures were taken in January or February.

The man who built my house was an artist. I found all sorts of mosaics after I moved in.

This is the back fence of my court yard. My land goes up to the nearest rocks beyond.

Seriously, since it looks like my Doc is going to be piling on more drugs for my poor tummy to deal with, this just might be the perfect ticket!!!

:hit

Sorry about the more drugs :hit illness stuff....I don't like that :hugs

@perchie.girl

Thanks so much for the areal photo. I really enjoy seeing how things are laid out. Love it actually. Buildings, streets, house plans etc.

Hello Everyone!!!!

Welcome @perchie.girl and @ApiaryandAviary (and did I say Welcome @jknox1982 ?) !!!

I made it back home finally!!! Way too many days away and too many $$$$. But at least no accidents!!!! Yay!!!
wee.gif

Tonight I go into work at 8 pm and get off tomorrow at 7 or 8 pm. Yay!!!! Not!!!
smack.gif

Extra $$$ good. Extra time not so much. A regular shift is very stressful there let alone a 24 hour shift. I'll be counting down the hours.

The Toddy Maker looks interesting. Can you use the coffee concentrate in baking?
I like my little French Press I got this year. Not concentrated but taste good! I use 2 spoons of sugar and some 1/2 n 1/2 to make it medium brown in 16 oz cups.

I always thought a Hot Toddy was water, alcohol, honey, lemon and/or spices to cure or help a cold? That's what grandpa always did!

Perchie the Sonoran Desert is very beautiful. At least from the view I had gotten. Pretty sure though I wouldn't want to live there. The climate is Waaaayyyyy too tough for me!

One more question about the water nipples...Since it's pretty warm here this week I was very hesitant to remove the other water sources. (Good thing since I got stuck away for 4 days). But does anyone have any other suggestions to get them to use them? So far I have tried food - strawberries, spinach, and Ultra Kibble. But they still aren't so interested. The Kibble got the most response,b ut they still don't use it. It still has most of the water in it that I put in before I left and today they all went down to the pond for water.

I can't remove the pond.

Well everyone have a great weekend!!!!

Well everyone have a great weekend!!!!

Not a fan but here is a technique.... loosen the nipples till they always have a drip of water on their tips. the remove ALL other water sources and access. They will learn.

Oh and thanks for the welcome. My part of the desert is pretty mild. Mostly ninetyish in the summer with only a few days over 100. Then mostly 70 ish in the winter with a few days near freezing. Long long growing season for sure we get probably ten cuttings of Alfalfa down in the desert.

Oh and for what its worth the Coffee Toddy maker which is simply a cold brewer makes coffee concentrate. You can use it any way you want. I used to put the appropriate amount in a cup and pour in nuked water for hot coffee in the morning.

Or you could take it further and make it strong like espresso.... there are bunches of recipes on the internet.
