Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

I steam saute Tilapia with a little lemon juice and water... non stick pan... it cooks very quickly...  then split the filet and throw it in a fish taco with the cabbage and salsa....  much tastier than the breaded fish....  I suck at breading fish any way... LOL.

deb

There's some kind of breading stuff in the baking aisle. We use that. And we use it for fish sandwiches too.

You know what? I keep thinking that we eat healthy, but as I talk about what we eat, it seems more and more like we just eat healthier versions of not really that healthy foods...

well, spouse has finally deserted the kitchen, I got to clean the couch...  actually it wasn't a big deal at all.  Came right off when I used soap with the warm water.  :lau

We got one duck and 4 roosters done, in just over 3 hours....  AWESOME!  And, for the first time ever, I did NADA!

Big boys are so cool!  Child #4 was super excited that he is now old enough to gut.  So, he got to pick which one he wanted to gut.  So funny.  I had three boys butchering, plucking, and gutting, the oldest boy (who will not kill) was inside on kitchen duty, as well as 'pretty-ing up' the finished birds (getting the few left over feathers, washing the cavity, etc.).  Youngest boy hauled wood and started the fire.  It isn't that cold today... that polar vortex must be pushing all the warm air up here, it is all kinds of rainy.  But, maybe because of the increase in humidity, I was all kinds of cold.

NICE day!!!!

Yay! for cleaning the couch!
Yay for big boys!
My older two are old enough to help butcher, but I haven't had enough practice to start letting them practice yet.

16, 13, 11, 8, 6 :D

EIGHT IS OLD ENOUGH TO GUT!?!?!?!?

Uh....yes.

I just asked one of my kids how old he was when he started killing the chickens for me, he thinks he was 8 or 9.

I think I was about the same age, when I started doing the job for my grandparents. :idunno

The six year old started the fire in the wood stove, but he only gets to do that if I am in the living room watching. However, he does it all alone, I don't say much, except things like "that sure is a great deal of smoke you are letting into my house, maybe you should crack the door" or what have you.

It was the 13, and 11 year old that did all of the killing by themselves.

The 13, 11, and 8 year old did the scalding, plucking, and gutting. The 16 year old carried out the boiling water though. The kids did all of the work outside, except for the final carcass rinse, done by the 16 year old.

I think they were maybe 7 when they started skinning and curing squirrel pelts.

Hummmm

Is this not normal parenting? :lau

They get their first knives at age 7. The 6 year old doesn't yet have a knife.

Not at all unnusual... especially given where you are. Independance skills are essential.... especially if they are taught the dangers and know how to keep from getting hurt...

Maybe, if you lived in New York City or Beverly Hills.

ETA
Then it would not be so "normal".

My girls are about the ages of your two older boys. We bought a knife for our oldest son when he was about 6-8. He's kind of an experimental sort and doesn't necessarily listen that well, so we kept the knife in our stuff unless he was going out to walk around the woods with dh.
Only very recently has dh stated teaching him how to use the knife and letting him use it outside alone; I don't approve of the alone party, but I bite my tongue. I will stop biting it and stay biting off dh's head off we end up in the ER!

I'm not certain about the 'normal' parenting. This is how I was raised, and look at how I turned out.

Mornin.... I must be crazy..... I was up at 7 Normally I dont get up till 9:30 which is when I hear my grandma stirring to getup... We have a baby monitor hooked up so I can hear her if she needs help.... makes for light sleeping for me. We have a receiver here in the dining room too so I am either in my bedroom or the dining room and I can keep tabs to see if she needs help. (dining room is where my computer desk is.)

Shes good during the day but a few years ago she fell and broke her hip.... So I am paranoid she will call and I wont hear her again. So the baby monitor...

I am baking Alaskan sourdough bread today!

Quote: A bit later I will make either chocolate chip cookies or a lemon pie--Of course I may be talked into making both....
