Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

I just added 14 Red Jungle Fowl eggs to the 6 American Jungle Fowl I already put in it the other day. I am hoping for a great hatch!

This guy laid all the eggs on their side but I know he had been collecting them since last Friday so I wanted to get them in the bator ASAP.

I love Jungle fowl.... they are soo pretty and great foragers... here the San Diego Zoo used to have a flock that roamed the grounds Keeping the bug population in control. It was a breed specific to the San Diego Zoo. Unfortunately the powers that be decided they didnt want them on the grounds any more... so they caught them all and destroyed the ones they couldnt find homes for.

So If you have San Diego Jungle fowl now its a big deal. There are a couple of breeders here I would love to get some stock from one day... Not a huge goal on my part but if they were offered I would take em.

My goal for chickens is Sumatras. But just about any jungle fowl blood line would do.... they make great fierce broodies.

Dont care about eggs. I will have plenty.

Quote: The breeder I got these eggs from stated they were stock from the San Diego Zoo that is why I got them from him and they are beautiful. I got them for broodies! I wanted some great broodies and most breeders keep them because they are fierce mommas and will give their life to protect their chicks and their chicks are healthier.

I guess that I had better get busy and finish the 6 ft welded wire fence all of the way around my coop. I lost a White Leghorn Australorp cross pullet a few days ago. I couldn't figure out what did it. It was missing it's head and some of it's abdomen. A Red Star disappeared with no trace at the same time. I came home from A LIONS club meeting at 9:00 Monday night and a Fox was on the property above me barking at my dog. My conclusion after that is that the fox probably killed the pullet and I haven't even seen feathers from the Red Star. I have been more diligent about locking them in the coop and run which is fully covered and I leave them locked up a little later in the morning.

The fenced area will be 100 X 50. I think that will be fox proof with a good bit of wire around the bottom.

Wow Hagar, I am so sorry for your losses. I hope you can get the fence done but remember foxes climb fences. Good luck getting rid of it and keeping your birds safe!

I don't have time to really catch up. I just touched on a few things on the first page of unread posts.
I'm sorry.

I'm super busy with school and chickens and children and...life, I guess.
Anyway, I need some chicken advice.
DD has a small (mascot) flock of Cochin Bantams. One has been hanging out under the shed and the back porch and she's been moving around really slowly. We put her in the brooder yesterday and put a little sugar and ACV in her water and some wet feed. When we put her flock mates in there with her last night, she did eat with them. Oh, we also gave her some egg (with garlic and oregano and coconut oil). I think I'm going to start serving those things separately.
I'm going to drain some kefir today, so I'll have whey to give her.
She seemed better this morning than she was yesterday morning, so we set her under the porch where she would feel safe, but so she'd be able to be with her flock. DD will go out and give her water (w/ sugar and ACV) and try to get her to eat something.
DD is really worried about her, so I told her I would find out if anyone here knew anything or could offer any advice or suggestions, etc.
Oh, and her poo is creamy yellow.
It isn't cecal poo is it? let me look for the poo thread for you.
(Only on BYC, right? Well,,, hopefully we are the only forum with poo threads.)

It sounds like you should use some wazzine and worm her and her flock mates the color of the poo sounds like worms to me. The chicks need to be wormed regularly. I just wormed 130+ birds with Ivermectin.
I would go for a course of corid and then worm them with valbazen.

@casportpony says the poo pictures are silly and unless you are getting nice green with white solid manure for most of their bowl movements, there is something wrong.

Every 7 is supposed to be a cecal poo but it is a light brown color; creamy yellow is not good.

Cochins are notorious for going broody.... could it be possible shes scouting out a broody spot? Believe it or not I have never had a sick chicken so I cant help with anything else.

That's what I thought, but as of the day before yesterday, she had lost a lot of condition. She's been sleeping in the coop with her flock, so that's when we started worrying.
Thanks. =)
I'm so happy for you that you haven't have a sick chicken!!!

Congrats!!!
I like the idea of Jungle Fowl; I like animals that either pull their own weight or mostly take care of themselves.

@ the range of "normal" poo! I'll show DD; I think it was just a cecal poo.

I think every chicken owner should see that thread; it would have saved me a lot of worry if I had known that the slightest red in the poo didn't mean coccidiosis and what the range of normal really is!

I have Wazzine. I'd just go ahead and worm everyone. I wormed one a while back b/c he was really bad, but he was the only one who looked like he needed it. (He free ranges and didn't really hang around with anyone.) But everyone is pretty much due to be wormed anyway.
DD had her in the brooder all day yesterday and the day before, but no signs of worms. Does that matter? If they have worms, they show up in the poo, don't they?

Corid, really? I'm sure it's not coccidiosis. I've had her long enough that she would have already gotten it and gotten over it. We bought her flock in April and they've been free ranging for more than a couple of months (through several rainy spells).
Worming makes sense and they're pretty much due anyway.
Who is @casportpony ?
Thank you very much for the advice! =)
