Six months old! I'm gonna eat my silkies!

According to the Henderson Breed Chart, Silkies rate one egg. A prolific layer rates six eggs. Silkies are not great layers. You did not get them to lay eggs. Silkies do not get very big so they are not a good meat bird. You did not get them to eat. Heck, you won't even eat a meatie.

We know you are bluffing. The problem is the Silkies know you are bluffing too. Empty threats won't do you any good.

I had two silkie roosters that I got rid of because they were crowing at only 2 1/2 months! The lady I bought them from also said that silkies take 8 or 9 months to mature and lay eggs. Don't eat the cute fluffy things! Don't do it! Not yet!

But! But! I've showed them like a zillion eggs -

Me: "See this Jethro? It's an egg. Wanna sit on it, maybe brood awhile?"
Jethro: *blank stare*

Me: "Ellie Mae! Look, it's an egg! Want me to give you a bunch and you could sit on them like *this* and hatch babies! Wouldn't that be wonderful?!?"

Ellie Mae: *blank stare*

Um, Kat, were you actually sitting on the eggs so they would have a visual demonstration of what a broody is supposed to do? If not, I think you should, just make sure DH has a video camera so we can all see!

Have Patience,
Have Patience,
Don't be in such a hurry.
When you get
Impatient
You only start to worry.
Remember,
Remember
That God is patient too
And think of all the times when others
Have to wait on you!!!!

(Ahem... I was singing that for you by the way. An oldie, but goodie camp song from my childhood. I have a whole repetoire of camp songs I can sing for you. My sister and I sing this one to her children regularly, much to their annoyance. We also sing "Gloom, despair and agony on me" from HeeHaw.

Silkies take forever. Seriously. For-ev-er. My pretty line started laying at around 9 months. The hatchery birds were a little earlier, but not much. My hatchery silkies lay like troopers. I get an egg every day out of that lot. They go broody in rotation too so somebody is always laying. The show line have laid consistantly since they started laying. It just took forever. They have gone broody twice between the three of them (one this summer and two at the same time this fall).

You did say you wanted a broody...
