Small rant - don't round up my restaurant check!

On the rare occasion that I pay cash at a restaurant, I give the waiter enough for the bill and the tip and tell her I don't need change.

Seems easier than counting out your change and then counting out the tip.

When I do want my change back, like paying a $21 check with two twenties, they always round in my favor if at all.

If I had the money to spend almost 50 dollars at a restaurant, I don't think I would worry about the 48 cents I was missing. Not to be smart or anything, but even fast food seems expensive to me.

I do speak to the manager and the waiter/waitress when this happens, but it seems to be their normal practice. I am just hoping to open everybody's eyes because I am just one voice. Last night's occurrence happened the last time I was at that particular restaurant, too, and I spoke to the OWNER, who said I had a point, but he obviously did not put an end to it because it happened again last night. I make sure the waiter/waitress knows why they get shorted on their tip and that if they had given me the correct change their tip would have been much larger. This post is covered in your point #3 - I am alerting everyone I can!

Did you tell the server? Maybe most people give them the change, so its habit now? I used to serve for 10 years. We don't want you angry or upset over something we can easily control. The 2 something an hour doesn't pay our bills, happy customers do.

I was a waitress for 10+ years and never in my life would have the nerve to do that! That's rude and wrong to assume anything...I always tip 20-25% , like Jersey girl. BAD BAD service gets 15% at best and I'd explain it to them why too. Now if a restaurant is busy and not the wiatresses fault on slow service and such-I dont fault them but when I see staff sitting around 2 feet from me talking and crabbing while I sit with an empty water glass-or a salad I havent touched in 20 minutes from a lack of fork-you get 15%. When did this all start to happen with rounding up-I have never heard of that or I need to pay ALOT more attention to my meal bills!

2 something an hour?! In what world?!

Minimum wage is nearly $10 an hour here (or will be in April 2012). If I get a snotty waitress, I would not tip. Tipping is reserved for those who work for it. It's not just assumed.

For those of you who have been waitresses/waiters, sorry if I offend. I've worked in the service industry as well. Retail to be specific. I know how hard it is to deal with customers, but really.. If you aren't pleasant to the customers, you shouldn't expect anything in return.

I would never withhold a tip from someone who was over-busy or as a result of a food mix up. It's all to do with attitude/friendliness in my opinion.

The minimum wage in NJ/NY does not apply to restaurant people - at least, it dind't when I was a waitress - you were considered a 'sales' person, who relied on 'commission' that needed to be declared at the end of every work day, so they could adjust your pay accordingly.
