Small rant - don't round up my restaurant check!

I've never had my change rounded up, and would be very upset it if were. Most of the places we eat out at we frequent often enough that the servers know us; sometimes even knowing what I will choose (I tend to get the same thing time after time; dh is more adventuresome). Years ago we ate out somewhere (I think it was steak?) and the waitress added an exrta digit for a HUGE tip! Her manager caught it and called to ask if we had really intended that large a tip (something like a one hundred dollars plus whatever we had actually tipped); we said absolutely not. She was fired and ever since we have been very specific on filling in the exact tip as well as the total on CC slips.

That's awful!

Whether it's two cents or 52 cents, if you don't owe it, it should be returned to you. I know this is going to sound harsh, but I would consider this stealing. Suppose she waited on 50 tables and rounded up and average of 48 cents on each tab...that's $24 at the end of the day. My bank has a program that rounds up your purchase to the next dollar and puts the change into your savings. It's amazing how fast it adds up.

I am inclined to tip at least 20% always.

I used to be a grifter in my younger days.Really and true. I even took the tips off of tables in restaurants. When I told a friend this whole story,(I didnt know he was a waiter) he said" you should be put in stocks in the middle of town and be flauged and have tomatoes and moldy lettuce tossed at you continously"!

Whenever I went into his work I always tiped him 50% just to calm the savage beast.

So to make a long story short, never ever grift and tell.

yup-bad tip there for me but I wouldn't stiff anyone either-maybe 10% and a talking to-after I had eaten all my food so as not to have it spit in before served to me!

She was just overall bad service, that was just the really funny thing of the night. She really did nothing to earn a tip, didn't bring food out, didn't check on drinks, nothing, just was busy gossiping with another server. She got 5% and that was being generous. At least DH didn't put change in his drink.

I've been a waitress before. I KNOW the job sucks and I know the pay sucks. If it's not for you, go apply at Walmart where your crappy attitude is acceptable apparently.

I would never take a tip from them, but if they are making as much as anyone else, why feel inclined to tip 20% if they are rude/don't deserve it?

to backpay my mischeviousness. its all in the Karma!
