We have THOROUGHLY enjoyed California's smoking ban for better than a decade now. It's been EASILY 20 or 25 years since you could smoke in a restaurant here. When I was a child, one of the reasons I grew up and smoked was I craved it... walked around in the 1960s and 1970s breathing in the smoke of adults around me. I was likely addicted to tar and nicotine by the time I was 11 or 12 years old, even though I'd never had a cigarette. I smoked for years but have been 100% tobacco-free since March 3, 1998. The ONLY time in all those years that I even thought about having a cigarette was when my Mom passed away in 2005 (she was diagnosed with cancer and was dead in under a month--it was really hard). But.. I knew that if I had just one, I'd start again, so I leaned on family and friends and got through it.
To this day, as an ex-smoker, I get very queasy to my stomach when I have to inhale someone else's nasty cloud of smoke because they're doing so in a public place.
I think banning it in areas where people bring their children and all public buildings, hospitals, and businesses is a good idea. California does have some really stupid laws on the books, but we are also pretty forward-thinking in a lot of ways out here and recognized the health risks of second-hand smoke long before most states.
I also think smoking should be banned within 20 feet of a business entrance. We were going to IHOP once to have breakfast, and a smoker was outside on the bench having a cigarette, 5 feet from the door, and blew the smoke RIGHT in my step-daughter's face and made her cough AND she smelled like a cigarette for the rest of the day. She was 9, and that was unfair.
We cannot legislate people into being considerate, so we need to ban behavior that puts other people's health at risk. Banning smoking in public places is a really good start.
