What can be done, I think it wont harm the chickens, is do what is recommended for hurricane preparation. Put a tablespoon of bleach for each gallon of water.

I use black rubber bowls, and they drink and drink and then they dump them over... so then I rinse and refill... never any yucky stuff.

thats what I use, but I have ducks and the second they see nice clean water they hop in!

well not always!, its been so cold they're lucky if they find a hole in the ice.

you haing your plastic water jug and lift it of the ground and it helps a lot to keep it clean
