Thanks for the tip! Got a few things I needed. Has anyone tried those chick pads for their brooders? I'm over shavings. Too stinky. I ordered some. They are 12 x 9 so I think I can just spread a few out. I'm hoping they will easier to change the scooping out a bunch of shavings.

I'm going to this event on Thursday in Abbeville.

Thursday, December 1, 2011 from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM (ET)

Heritage Poultry INTENSIVE Workshop, SC
Heritage Creek Farm
63 Curt Dr.
Abbeville, SC 29620 Workshop Overview:

We are excited to provide this advanced teaching for those who are raising standard bred poultry for sustainable farming, marketing, exhibition and preservation. During this day-long intensive workshop you will learn how to properly identify heritage poultry breeds, how to select for meat qualities and rate of growth, how to select for egg production, how to select your ongoing breeding stock and learn the basics of genetics and breeding. All this will be done on a model farm and will include live breeds of standard-bred poultry. Participants will have opportunity to actually handle birds themselves and network with like minded people who share is this same vision to see local, sustainable poultry farming through the area where you live.

One of the highlights of the day will be the lunch that will include the cooking of heritage poultry. There is great interest throughout the USA to see these historical, heirloom breeds of poultry back on the kitchen tables of American families. This workshop will be taught by Sustainable Poultry Specialist, Jim Adkins, Don Schrider and other qualified instructors.

Has anyone been to one before? I think I already know most of the stuff but thought it might be fun to network. It's put on by The Center for Poultry. I hope it will be worthwhile!

Hey folks,

How do y'all do worming? My girls are 4 months and I want to worm them before they start laying. Not sure what the schedule should be in this area, either - 3 months, once a year, etc.

I'm leaning toward wazine followed by ivermectin paste (injectable is way too expensive for 6 chickens). I have also heard to switch between wormers for regular treatment to prevent resistant strains of bugs. Any recommendations based on what has worked for you?

Thanks!!!
Meg

Hello Everyone! Hope you are all doing well and your birds too with this weather! I have a question for those of you with Peafowl--what do you feed them? I just want to know what people out there are doing with these strange birds as far as food goes.....

Changed my mind based on some information I found here and on the interwebs...

Weeeellll after a little searching regarding Valbazen prices, my six pullets and I are wondering if someone has a large quantity from which they'd be willing to sell me ~50mL. I'll gladly pay - ie if your 500mL bottle cost $50, I'll give you $5 for 50mL.

Thoughts/availability??

I used Wazine at first when I only had a few chickens and it worked great for me. I've used Verm-x, red pepper flakes, pumpkin seeds etc. Now I mostly just add Diatomaceous Earth mixed in with their food on a regular basis and that seems to work very well. This is best to maintain, not to get rid of worms. So you could worm with Wazine and then start on a regular regimen of DE in the food to keep them worm free and healthy. That's what works for me. I can't afford to throw away 2 weeks worth of eggs every few months when using Wazine. I will occasionally use Wazine while my birds are molting and they're not laying anyway. Otherwise it's just the DE.
