FrenchHen, I've got an idea for you. It's not quite as good, but a fairly good substitute for smoked pulled BBQ is this: Wait till Piggly Wiggly has Boston butts on sale for 98 cents a pound. Cut an onion into rings and place in the bottom of crockpot. Add 1/2 c. water. (You could add just a dab of liquid smoke). Cut the fat off of the outside of the meat and place meat on top of onions and cook for 8 to 12 hours on low. Check periodically and turn meat over. When it falls to pieces, take it out to cool and drain on a rack. Put meat in bowl of mixer. Add a bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce and mix to desired consistency.
I cannot fry stuff because it is bad for hubby but man I will sure eat it up! He could not say nothing to you about what you cooked in my kitchen. hehehehehehe

ahem nope It used to drive me crazy to get a craving for a BBQ sandwich and run out to a Smith's Restaurant and when I ordered it, they had put coleslaw on it... why on earth would ruin good BBQ like that?

LOL! That is a very localized term... DH works with a bunch of guys who say hosepipe for hose and it drives him batty (and we are both native to Louisiana). Can I ask if your DH is from the N.O./Houma/Thibodeaux part of the state? (Very southeastern part of the boot)

I've done that before. I've even smoked with two flower pots, a hot plate, and a pie tin full of wood chips. It's not the same as those who use a pit. I don't have a Piggly Wiggly out here, but I can get pork shoulder cheap this time of year. I'm not a huge sauce fan.
I might make husband get some ribs for dinner...wonder if my boys would eat them.
Hubby just came home with a 10 lb boston butt for his famous BBQ ($1.18/lb --we wait for it to get close to $1/lb) He created his own secret rub years ago and smokes it for 12-14 hours. Yummo.
Do you guys pull over for funerals? I nearly got into a fight with Husband before he was Husband because he didn't pull over. I was shocked at his insensitivity. He was shocked that I cared.
My Family all grew up up north (Michigan & Oregon) so they don't actually fry food when they cook it. Most of my cooking requires only a little oil. I like baking best. I was shocked to find out that people fry turn overs! That is amazing to me.
