Miss Boots has been going from nest box to nest box, trying to incubate ALL the eggs. She has begun actually HISSING at me when I come to collect eggs. I don't take them from under her, but I do collect her "next to incubate" eggs.

You need to stock up on eggs for them to hatch...this way by next year you'll have more hens to lay, when some go broody..

Perfect idea! My Dad has been complaining about getting fewer eggs this past week, we are getting enough for us but he likes to give them to friends. This is the perfect excuse for me to keep more chicks :)
I have a doz welsummer and a doz cream legbar eggs on the way. Even with the crapy hatch rate for shipped eggs I should get a few babies :)

Your lucky she doesn't move all the eggs into one box. Mine even moved the fake eggs I put in the other boxes to try and teach the girls it's ok to lay in them.

Had a looong but great weekend with my sons and their families coming over. Hope you all had the same. If not fishing or walking on the beach picking up stones and beach glass, my granddaughters and grandsons were digging up worms from under rocks etc. and feeding it to the chickens. The chickens have learned that a young child with an outstretched hand is a good thing and come out of the bushes to see what they have in store for them. The kids were happy, the chickens were happy,,, what more could I have asked? It kept the kids out of trouble and the chickens friendly and contented.

After finishing up all the left over dishes and putting the extra tables and platters away...I think I am going back to bed. I love them all dearly but I am just too pooped out from a weekend of entertaining.

I love all the baby chick photos, especially Elmer. Those poofy cheeks are just too cute.

HarborviewHens, Elmer Poofy-Cheeks thanks you! What a lovely weekend you've had, and such a creative solution to busy grandchildren and worm-loving hens! I love it! Such a beautiful memory this weekend will be for you, may you have many more like it-- but after a much-needed rest!

The Barbu d'Anvers chicks are 2 weeks old now! Elmer rides on my shoulder as I do house chores, and Emmaline aka Emmy, beams her Zen-like calm as she makes a nest for herself in my palm. Twice per day we're outdoors in the grass, and they spend time exploring, but then come back to my lap and arms for nap times. Love, love, love these babies!

Hello All- I have been building my coop in Westchester and working toward getting my first four chickens! I am very excited.

Some people on this board recommended Clark Farms as a place to get the chicks, and their site looks great, listing many choices and ages. However I have not been able to get in touch with anyone at the farm and I happened onto their facebook page. There are numerous messages on their from angry people who have been waiting for coops. Does anyone here have any info about the farm?

Any other recommendations for sources of chickens?

I am hoping to get them old enough that they can go out into the coop right away.
Thanks so much for any help with this!

Just got home from Shirley feed. Had to pick up a few more chick sized feed & water containers. My partridge rock broody is in my little A frame coop, the Cochin is going into a Xlarge dog travel crate, and my silkie who is also broody now is getting a sectioned off area of the main coop. Some eggs are due on Friday the others I don't think shipped yet.

Am I doing something wrong to have 1/3 of my flock broody at once? To many treats?

I got my chickens from them in November. They weren't quick to get back to me so I think that this is a common issue. Try all emails listed and keep calling. On the other hand, they did have a family health issue that took them out of town and that may be happening again.(If that was true)

My chickens were very healthy and have done extremely well. Hopefully someone here may have better advice for you.

What is the name and Where is the feed store in Shirley? I live in Nassau but would like to have an alternative place to go if something is not available. Thanks!
