Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Well home from the fair... Saw Roberta, she looked like she needed a long nap. When I first askedif it was her she looked at me as if she did not want to give up that information. I was going to follow the question with " No I'm not a cop or with the IRS.". It was a great little fair .im definitely going to enter some things next year.

I was thinking the same thing for this year. Until I realized it was the same weekend as my exams. My cheddar pear pie perhaps. Or a crocheted piece.

Today was surreal. Left the house by 6:45. Hundreds of people taking the exams. I wanted to tell all the young kids I was on my second layoff. But that would be spoiling the surprise.

I finished each exam in 1-1/2 hours. I had about 2-1/2 hours to kill between the tests, so I did some shopping for non-perishables and then took a nap for about an hour. I baked and cooked when I got home but was so fried all I could do was watch tv and crochet. Barely even made small talk with Bobby.

Just a weird feeling day. Maybe it's lack of sleep. Or too many Mallomars...

Hi, everybody.

I went to the Queens County Fair today; met up with Roberta, saw her beautiful chickens. One of them won BEST IN SHOW. Chatting with her made the day extra special for me.

It was my first day up and out of the house since my surgery. I was a bit apprehensive about strolling around too far from our car, but the parking was on site, and the entire show was perfectly laid out, nice and compact. The events were fun, the livestock handsome, and the food at the kiosks was tasty and wholesome.

Roberta, you really need to rest up from your labors. You're walkin' like it's hurtin' !! But those 30 shampooed chickens of yours sure looked clean and shiny.

I slept for three hours when I got home.

Found all four of my hens obediently inside their fenced half of the backyard. The two youngest have been flying up onto the top of the three foot high fence and then hopping down on the other side. Rounding them up and leading them back inside was getting old; it was cute the first few times, but then just plain annoying, so two days ago, I outfoxed them.

I had to move real slow because of the healing sutures on my belly, but I managed to tie a plastic string around a hickory tree as high up as I could reach, then tied the other end to the ChickArena twenty feet away to the north.

Tied another length of it around the same tree and strung it out thirty feet to the east and tied it to a pine tree there. The string was thus positioned exactly above the whole fence line. Armed with about three dozen wooden clothes pins, I used four pair of thin nylon curtain panels to increase the height of the fence, pinning the curtains to the string above and the fence below, effectively blocking the girls inside their yard.

I'll leave the curtains in place for two weeks or so, in the hopes that the girls will be conditioned to staying put.

Or, maybe they're already planning to take off the minute I take the curtains down!

We shall see.

I'm sorry I missed the fair yesterday-but today I am SO there! The benefit was really good, but of course, me being me, cried at odd intervals every time I spoke with the little boys father, mother, older sister, a distant relative, or someone who looked like a fireman. Yeah-that's how I roll.

I'm going to take the kids to mass, then I'm coming west! I don't think any of the kids want to come. Maybe if I tell them there's candy or something...

Last night when I was checking on the girls when I got home, Diva was sitting on the floor of the coop. I hope she's ok, but she let me TOUCH her, so I am actually terrified to go out there this morning. Diva's the flake that doesn't let anyone near her without screaming like a nut.

Good morning all... Well I just sold my first dozen eggs for $5 . How cool is that. I'm going to start the girls a "Feed Fund" kinda like a college fund . Loretta is having a yard sale this weekend and everyone wanted eggs after seeing her girls . She ran out and gave me a call this morning. Woke Richard up after getting in late last night from Vegas. Such is life.
Saw a terrible accident on the way home from the airport. I couldn't believe how much traffic was on the highway at 10:30 last night. It was pouring , these people were driving just way too fast. One car was flipped completely over. Richard said he sees things like that everyday back and forth to work.

Hi everyone. I haven't posted in a long time, been
kinda bummed. I'm ok though. My girls are all big now
even the young ones are 4 months :( I miss having
little chicks. My silkie is broody, I so want to stick some
fertile eggs under her but will wait till spring. MPC is
selling cream legbar eggs now, it's so tempting. I hope
everyone is well.

HUGS,
Karen

If it were my girls, they'd have the curtains unpinned already!

After my hellish day yesterday, I woke with a killer headache (at like 4:30 am). Popped a couple of advil and am trying to walk through it. I went to a 7am meeting on the beach and had breakfast with some friends. Now just hanging around until meeting up with the fam at the Bronx Zoo at 1pm. Looking forward to being with my niece and nephews and my brothers and their wives. It's a beautiful day.

I made a boatload of sauce yesterday, so I had to take some stuff out of the freezer. The girls are having a field day. They love soy burgers and "chicken" cutlets. Since my daughter stopped eating vegetarian, I'm getting rid of some of that stuff that's been hanging around in the freezer too long.

Looking forward to crocheting some more today. So relaxing!

Couldn't fall asleep until about 1:30 am and then the buzzsaw was going all night (still is) and my alarm went off at 5:15.

Kill me now.
