Hi, everybody.
I went to the Queens County Fair today; met up with Roberta, saw her beautiful chickens. One of them won BEST IN SHOW. Chatting with her made the day extra special for me.
It was my first day up and out of the house since my surgery. I was a bit apprehensive about strolling around too far from our car, but the parking was on site, and the entire show was perfectly laid out, nice and compact. The events were fun, the livestock handsome, and the food at the kiosks was tasty and wholesome.
Roberta, you really need to rest up from your labors. You're walkin' like it's hurtin' !! But those 30 shampooed chickens of yours sure looked clean and shiny.
I slept for three hours when I got home.
Found all four of my hens obediently inside their fenced half of the backyard. The two youngest have been flying up onto the top of the three foot high fence and then hopping down on the other side. Rounding them up and leading them back inside was getting old; it was cute the first few times, but then just plain annoying, so two days ago, I outfoxed them.
I had to move real slow because of the healing sutures on my belly, but I managed to tie a plastic string around a hickory tree as high up as I could reach, then tied the other end to the ChickArena twenty feet away to the north.
Tied another length of it around the same tree and strung it out thirty feet to the east and tied it to a pine tree there. The string was thus positioned exactly above the whole fence line. Armed with about three dozen wooden clothes pins, I used four pair of thin nylon curtain panels to increase the height of the fence, pinning the curtains to the string above and the fence below, effectively blocking the girls inside their yard.
I'll leave the curtains in place for two weeks or so, in the hopes that the girls will be conditioned to staying put.
Or, maybe they're already planning to take off the minute I take the curtains down!
We shall see.
