Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I have a question for everyone With experience. Last Halloween we has snow and lost power for four days, no heat and we had to boil the water for a week. So we are bracing for the worst that way. We lost a lot of trees etc and roads got closed. I've got three week old chicks under an ecoglow, if we have no heat I'm prepared to heat water and pour it Into water bottles around the brooder, do you think that is good enough? My sister suggested a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and that's my only solution to getting them more heat. My backyard floods during a heavy storm, so I'm glad they are in the house and not the coop. The location of the coop would mean I would have to cross a little river to get to them. Anything I should be doing for them that I normally wouldn't do ? Being my first storm with them..it's going to. Be interesting.

Thanks and I hope everyone stays safe and fares well.

To me, that sounds fine. They're pretty big now, so they should be okay. Or you could always carry them around in a snuggly. Not that any of us have done that, lol.

I could always make you an Extra Large Chick Bra (don't ask...)

My parents made me bring broody and chicks inside tonight. Here is a pic of momma and baby pumpkin. The other chick, Sandy, is under her. Momma was taking little bits of chick food and putting them in front of the chick to eat. It was the sweetest thing I have ever seen.

My parents just don't seem to understand the point of letting
the hen raise them.

Oh SO totally adorable!! I'm glad they're inside. If I could bring my girls inside I would in a second. (But my husband DID buy plywood to protect the coops. Thank GOD!!)

I think Sandy and Pumpkin are perfect names! Enjoy that chickie sweetness. We will also need many more pictures of that broody and her bitties!!

So, today was "Hurricane proof the chickens day" Dan bought sheets of ply wood and nailed them to the sides of the chicken run, May assisted him, because she's the Foreman of any and all yard work that takes place.(She clucks and inspects everything you pick up, gives it a good eyeball then moves on to the next thing) Merriweather just kept him on his toes by pecking at his boots while he worked.

He came inside to get a drink and asked me if they did this to me when I did stuff outside...I told him he's lucky he doesn't have one on each shoulder.

So, then I gave the hen house a quick cleaning, a sprinkle of DE and more shavings. I went to pick up the plastic Easter eggs I put in the nest boxes that they constantly throw OUT of the nest boxes, and OMG-there was a little GREEN egg in one of the nest boxes!!! (Not plastic either!!) It's gotta be DIva's Since she's the EE of the group, with a BRIGHT red comb. So exciting. they got some extra meal worms with their oatmeal and applesauce. Thank goodness finally! AN EGG!

I'm hoping the rest of the girls follow suit.

Everyone oooh'd and aaaah'd over the egg. (We're all a bit strange) then it went on the counter for MY breakfast tomorrow.

I'll try to get tapatalk to work for me to post a picture-it's really light green, but such a pretty green anyway!

Tomorrow I'm going over to Brians to pick up some more feed. I have the boys stacking the extra cord and a half of wood we had delivered from a friend around the block. We have to cover whatever won't fit inside on the porch. I have my generator ready to go for the freezer if need be, I only have a half the freezer filled right now, so if anyone needs to use some of my space for their things-just let me know.

I am totally in love with my fireplace insert. It's SO pretty, and the heat pumps out like gangbusters!

so neat, at least you'll never forget the date she laid her first egg, it was Hurricane Sandy time!

Congratulations1!

Safe days ahead for you and yours,

Well if it turns into a disaster, I have around 500 lbs in my house right now.
Anyone is welcome if need be.

I've been watching the weather channel all day and I'm worried for all of you in Long Island. Can you please be sure to keep us updated once the storm sets in?

If you lose power and it gets cold, try to keep the chicks in the same room with you. Whichever room has the most people in it, will be the warmest. Our newest silkies from Florida are being quarantined in the finished lower level of our home. But, I've already warned my hubby that they are moving up into the living room if we lose power and it gets cold.

I'm sorry that you not got two girls. But, they are adorable and I'm so glad they are healthy.

Congratulations on the egg! It's so much fun to see all the colors they produce.

We've been considering a wood pellet stove...what kind of fuel does the insert use?

You can't say something like that and not spark conversation...I am picturing a baby sling tucked between my girls.....Problem with snuggling chicks is that I have a human baby attached to my front most days in her carrier.

So it sucks if we have to bring the chicks upstairs since we just moved them downstairs...lol but I am thinking that is what will happen. I know the chicks are family when they get counted for how much water we should have on hand lol

Good luck all of you on the island and everyone really, hopefully it is quick and nothing gets damaged.
