Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Here's the news from Coope Diem. Everything is battened, flimsy sports car has been safely stowed in Bobby's Commack garage, chicken coop cleaned and water bottles filled.

As we were leaving to take the Corvette to the garage, Laura called to tell me she had been in a car accident. A girl turned left into her front driver's side. No airbag trigger. Laura called the HMFD, who were still at the firehouse from the Sunday morning stuff. She told me she was okay and not to come down. Yeah right. Like I hear fire engines and sirens and police cars going to my kid's accident and I'm going to stay home. When I got there, there were 2 HMFD trucks and an ambulance. They had her on oxygen and were strapping her to a back board. We rode in the ambulance to the hospital, where she was checked out and pronounced okay. Her LT and another FF were there the whole time and then her Captain came by. Her boyfriend's mom came down and then, when he finally got the 42 text messages, her boyfriend left work (big OT) and showed up with flowers just in time to drive us home. (I had sent Bobby home with my car.)

All in all, it was just a lot of excitement. She's gonna be hurting tomorrow - whiplash injuries and a bruised knee - but she has Motrin and Flexeril and a day off due to the hurricane. The car is another story. I just took the collision off literally 3 days ago. But the guy whose shop who has it is an HMFD member and the other driver was totally at fault (and admitted it) so it will all work out.

Her ER nurse was another HMFD member, and Laura knew the ambulance crew. They treated me with kid gloves and you could see how much they care about my daughter. Her LT was awesome. Everyone's been calling and texting her to make sure she's okay. Does my heart good.

So we're all set for the hurricane. I have craploads of yarn to work with and plenty of candles and batteries. We have a generator, so we're good to go. I'm not nervous (I tend to be skeptical about these things) but we did prepare.

My email is [email protected] if anyone needs to get in touch. And Roberta, Heather, Donna, Rosie and I think Carol all have my cellphone number. If anyone needs anything, even just to vent/cry/laugh/whatever, don't hesitate to call.

And if anyone has anything they want crocheted, let me know. I plan to do nothing else. I'm still laughing over Rosie's quote: "I'll be crocheting and you'll be leaving me alone."

And finally, I'll share what I heard at a meeting this morning: "If you face the sunlight, the shadows will always be behind you."

Stay safe, everyone.

That's a crazy story Suzanne, so glad she is ok, Whew!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again for getting the feed!

We spent the day "battening down the hatches"...got extra feed, started winterizing the coop, filled up extra 5 gallon pails of water for the birds etc. I found food grade BPA free buckets at Lowes and bought several (actually way too many). I'm not usually nervous about storms but we had so many problems last year after Irene (needed new roof, gutters, ceilings) that I'm not ready for any more disasters and I feel a bit anxious.

Tomorrow morning, I will be picking up my daughter and sister to bring them to my house. We are also preparing to go pick up my son at Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, PA, if need be. Last year, when Irene hit...the city flooded and was evacuated. I'll try to find some pics and post them. I'm in Poughkeepsie/Hyde Park and my email is littlecrittersfarm at gmail. Carol and Roberta have my cell number and you can call or text me if I can be of any help.

Suzanne, I'm so glad your daughter is ok!

Any yarn projects?

So, my son went out to fill the chicken waterer and found...ANOTHER GREEN EGG!!! So darned exciting!! Diva is getting that whole egg production thing kick started!

I SO hope the rest of the girls figure it out pretty soon!

My husband just got home, everything in the yard is in or down, and I'm exhausted. I'm going up to fold socks-Dan's working in the morning, and figures he's gonna need dry socks. LOTS of them!

I really like that quote, thank you for sharing. Here is a picture of Wilkes-Barre last year. Kings College is behind and to the right of the building with the dome (the tall buildings). The water came up to the edge of the campus but there was no damage.

If anyone needs help just let me know.
My girls have been acting very strange all day (stranger) this morning when I went to let them out they were all hiding behind the little tykes coop. The little girls never get anywhere near the big ones.
Al glad you checked in.
Be safe everyone...

Yesterday, as we were prepping for the hurricane, I convinced my husband to make new feeders for our coop. I am totally thrilled with them! We used the design on this site ---> www.the-chicken-chick.com with a very slight modification. I now have feeders that hold 3+ days of food for our egg laying flock and almost 6 days worth for the silkies (since they eat less). I also have neat oyster shell dispensers too. These are freeing up so much floor space and are so easy to top off with feed. I love these!
