Ugh I'm sick :(
Is anyone from long island ordering chicks from My Per Chicken for the spring??
I want 2 or 3 but my min order is 4. I guess I can get 4 if I have to. Hehe
Anyways let me know we can share shipping

I would like to order chicks if I don't bring fertile eggs back from Springfield. Roberta said they should have eggs there.
Can you order females from My Pet Chicken?
I also want only a couple 3 maybe.
If you can't hold out a couple of weeks let me know.

Hey, I'm going to check through the sick-diagnose here threads but real quick, I think one of the bantams has had blood in her poo for two days now. It's not much, and neither of them seems sick but off the bat, anything I should jump on right away? Do I need to segregate them?

Imprfctme: I am aware of the young eagles rescued this summer, actually not to far from where I live.

We contacted the DEC to let them know and they sent out their Raptor Guy. My husband took him out on his boat to shown him where he has seen the eagles. The stick carrying is very exciting. We are hopeful. They are in an area where the homes are on many acres. I still get chills thinking about seeing one not 20 feet away from me in my backyard.

Of course we don't want to advertise too much so that they wont be harassed. We had to educate many boaters about our ospreys. I made many walks down to the dock to tell boaters to keep a safe distance so that they didn't drive them off the nest.

Great idea about the Bronx Zoo. We put an osprey pole but they used the pilings on our dock instead! Go Figure!

How old are the chicks with the bloody poop?
Are they still on medicated chick starter?
You may need to look for Corid, it's Amprolium in a higher dose for treating of cocci.
It is in Doc Brown's emergency kit.
And usually, if one bird has it, they all get it.
it's just looks too tasty for the cannibals to not eat it if they see it lying on the ground.
There is also something similar, called a cecal poop. it isn't as red, and is completely normal.
But this doesn't look like cecal, it looks like cocci...
Let me know if I need to send it, it can kill pretty quickly if not addressed right away.

yes, as Roberta noted, sometimes birds can shed a bit of their intestinal lining which makes it look like blood in the poo....i can't tell from your picture

Heather, I am with Roberta on this one. I don't think they usually shed lining that frequently. I have a bag of corid as well, if you need it. I can almost always get that at TSC up here if anyone ever needs it stat.

Karen and Carol, and anyone else who is interested... I am going to put in a pretty big chick order this year, probaby from ideal (www.ideal-poultry.com), Meyers (www.meyerhatchery.com) or from myer (in PA www.myerspoultry.com ). Not sure which yet, ideal has the selection I want and but doesn't sex their polish and is far away, meyers has most of what I want (no NN or brabanters),but sexes their polish, myer in pa has everthing I want except the brabanters, sexes their polish, and is very close (so I am leaning toward them). I am not sure if I have ever heard of anyone ordering from them though. Anyway, if anyone wants something and doesn't want a minimum to deal with, I am happy to carry the order.

Today I made a dust bath out of a shallow, but wide, storage container, all natural play sand, and DE. The girls just gave me this look like I am out of my mind, but I bet they are all in it by tomorrow morning. And I built some storage shelves for my DD bedroom (really, I just cut some 1 x 8 pine into lengths, sanded it, and put it up on brackets, but it looks pretty good with the storage bin system that I made out of pine this summer for her toys).

DH just revealed that he has no interest in the gamebirds, but he has always dreamed about building a larger than life aviary. So I told him to go for it and I would take care of the bird part. And so begins the winter planning for the most insane gamebird enclosure ever! He wants to rig the netting to a tree so it is really high for them and to use electrical wire around the 8 foot garden fencing walls to keep the predators from climbing up to the netting and cutting in. He is so funny. He will be the one out there with a cup of coffee and the paper feeding the partridge... I am sooo excited. So, if anyone wants some pheasants or quail or partridge, I will be ordering them at some point as well.

Ok, I am going to get into soooo much trouble this winter between birds, incubators, and seed catalogs. Someone stop me.

This was a good one. I don't have any missing feathers - yet - but I do need to work out a dust bath solution now that I can't really let them free-range until HawkFest 2012 ends. I really really don't want to have mites and lice, ewww.

Al did you see this article?

Thanks for reposting Tina -

Thanks, Heather. The article, I believe, covered every possible reason for feather loss. So far, the girls that have molted are not getting picked on any longer. I hope this means an end to the problem.

Have a Happy New Year everyone!

Stop you?! I'm egging (ha!) you on! I think it'll be awesome! What about peafowl? I looked at getting a potting shed today with a big skylight. I'm still debating getting quail but maybe not this year. I want the garden to come first in 2013. I'm planning on putting in a butterfly garden and some more berry bushes. I made a dust bath too, I hope they use it. They are so weird, I can't get them to cool off in the summer either.

It's not a chick, it's the D'Uccle bantam I picked up at the NJ state fair last Aug. I still don't know how old she is, but she was fully feathered then. She hasn't laid an egg yet though. She has been eating pellets since I brought her home. I clean their nesting area every morning so no-one has been eating the poo. I will do a thorough coop clean as soon as I can, tomorrow or Wednesday when the kids go back to school. I am going to look through my supplies drawer in the morning and see what I have for treatment. I might have some corricid already. I'm still not convinced that that is what it is though. I might bring her indoors and observe her. Heck I'm not even 100% sure it was the D'Uccle. Maybe I'll get that camera in there. If I treat the whole flock, do I need to throw out any eggs? Happy New Year everyone! I love that we're all online discussing chickens. :) it's 11:11! I wish for perfect health for all of us, avian and human alike. Much love -

It shows how much of a life we all have hanging out on BYC an hour to midnight on New Years Eve. Just kidding! I think chickens keep us at home doing safe things.
