Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Stop you?! I'm egging (ha!) you on! I think it'll be awesome! What about peafowl? I looked at getting a potting shed today with a big skylight. I'm still debating getting quail but maybe not this year. I want the garden to come first in 2013. I'm planning on putting in a butterfly garden and some more berry bushes. I made a dust bath too, I hope they use it. They are so weird, I can't get them to cool off in the summer either.
It's not a chick, it's the D'Uccle bantam I picked up at the NJ state fair last Aug. I still don't know how old she is, but she was fully feathered then. She hasn't laid an egg yet though. She has been eating pellets since I brought her home. I clean their nesting area every morning so no-one has been eating the poo. I will do a thorough coop clean as soon as I can, tomorrow or Wednesday when the kids go back to school.
I am going to look through my supplies drawer in the morning and see what I have for treatment. I might have some corricid already. I'm still not convinced that that is what it is though. I might bring her indoors and observe her. Heck I'm not even 100% sure it was the D'Uccle. Maybe I'll get that camera in there. If I treat the whole flock, do I need to throw out any eggs?
Happy New Year everyone! I love that we're all online discussing chickens.

it's 11:11! I wish for perfect health for all of us, avian and human alike. Much love -

It shows how much of a life we all have hanging out on BYC an hour to midnight on New Years Eve. Just kidding! I think chickens keep us at home doing safe things.
Many good wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
Blessings to all,
Tina

I would like to order chicks if I don't bring fertile eggs back from Springfield. Roberta said they should have eggs there.
Can you order females from My Pet Chicken?
I also want only a couple 3 maybe.
If you can't hold out a couple of weeks let me know.

I'm going to place order in 3-4 weeks for late April early may delivery. Yes you can order females. They sex bantams too. Check out the my pet chicken website. I'm thinking BCM, Appenzeller spitz, maybe a white crested black polish.

Yeah, I know - i'm still awake. I swear I didn't drink anything either, just can't turn my mind off. So naturally I went out to the coop at 2:22am and collected the poo I photographed earlier into a baggie to take to the vet. I dropped off the dog's poo last week, guess it's a poo-fect record. Sorry. I also left the automatic camera on and in the roosting area. I picked up the bantam D'Uccle and took her indoors and checked her over as well as I could, not really knowing exactly what I'm looking for, but she seems fine. Comb is nice and red, she chirruped at me, no lice or anything around her vent... dunno what I'm missing. I also don't seem to have any Corrid - wait forgot to check the garage - brb - nope, Wazine and Oxine. I also have a few different antibiotic packs and the usual electrolyte stuff. I guess at a minimum I will stick to the cleaning plan and add some ACV to the water. If it comes back again (the bloody poo) I will jump right on meds. As it is I have to wait until Wed to take the fecal sample in. Why does this always happen on a holiday.

Of course the other thing is the very first time I have written the new year 1/1/13 it was on a plastic baggie containing poop. Something tells me that is a bad omen.

Anyone even thinking about Peafowl.
My Peaches has been on the roof of the house all night.
Hasn't been eaten yet.
More stress to deal with!

Karen and Carol, and anyone else who is interested... I am going to put in a pretty big chick order this year, probaby from ideal (www.ideal-poultry.com), Meyers (www.meyerhatchery.com) or from myer (in PA www.myerspoultry.com ). Not sure which yet, ideal has the selection I want and but doesn't sex their polish and is far away, meyers has most of what I want (no NN or brabanters),but sexes their polish, myer in pa has everthing I want except the brabanters, sexes their polish, and is very close (so I am leaning toward them). I am not sure if I have ever heard of anyone ordering from them though.
From the 'upstate' thread, I know Featherz from Albany area just hatched out NN for the New Years Hatchalong. And think Marquisella from Vernon just got a flock of Brabanters so she will likely have chicks/eggs this spring. I've been looking at the Meyer's Hatchery catalog many times. And now Burpee and Henry Fields seed catalogs. We all ride on the same crazy train....

Happy New Year all you wonderful chicken peeps!

I hope 2013 brings you a healthy flock, lots of eggs and only as much poop as you can handle...

My neigbors have gently suggested that I stop at peafowl. LOL. That noise they make scares the bejeezus out of me anyway. My cousin has them and Mr. P is like Kato from the old pink panther films. He sneaks up on you and then cuts loose with that call. We were at a BBQ there and I didn't realize they liked the roof, he stood over me and made that noise and I almost fell off the deck. Nope. No Peafowl here.
