Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I am getting goose bumps just thinking about it.

When I got divorced I moved back down here to be closer to my family so they couuld help me get started all over again with my 10 month old son. sigh.....that was 27 years ago.

my second dh works for the city of NY and did he not....... we'd have been up there a long time ago.

Do you like Blue Mountaion Lake Museum???? I love it.
I know, I get goosebumps too thinking of it. I think I first became drawn to that kind of wintry landscape when I read Jack London stories.

The first year we rented, we stayed on Blue Mountain Lake but sadly didn't visit the museum, our kids were babies then. One day, I will go check it out, when I live there - ha, ha!

I have to say though that I'd hate to try and keep chickens up there, too many predators! Funny thing, the old farmhouse we looked at last summer in Wilmington was sold to a nice young couple from the area. We rode our bikes past and stopped to say hello. They had a young daughter and had just gotten chickens. I was waaay jealous that they got the house and we didn't but truth be told, it was a really old house and one old house is probably about as much work as we can handle!

I wouldn't let myself get attached to any hens I'd keep up there. The other house we looked at also had kept chickens (I think the guy was a breeder as he had pens all over the place). You could see where animals had dug under his chains and barriers to get to the poor birds. Not fun!

Sorry to hear of your bird Opal, so sad to lose any of them and hurts every time!

True that!
Chickens need to be locked up really secure in more of a barn type buiding with no windows then a coop.lol
Wilmington is very nice.
Lake Clear as well. Spent many nice days boating and sitting on a small beach there . Rainbow Lake.....Round Lake all breath taking.
Bloomingdale, outside of S.L is a good place to live if you want to be outside of town limits.

I hope you get your dream house someday. With a couple of really air-tight wood stoves.

It hit 52 below 1 time while I was living there and it was hard to believe it. My husky's feet were squeaking as he walked in the snow. Dangerous cold...........

Hi Maggie, I know it gets so cold up there! My hubby and I winter camped at the base of Mount Marcy once in anticipation of hiking it the next day. let's just say at -27f without windchill, I wasn't much in the mood for sleeping or hiking the next day! I was pregnant with my first and didn't know it. I was up all night peeing, it was horrible! The trees were cracking all around us, so I can imagine your poor husky's feet. :(

Good times…

Well, the latest in the saga of Ben is that I have found out that the farm I got his egg from was shut down because of disease. I have been going back and forth about what to do about it. From what I read about Marek's, it's not transmitted through the eggs, but unvaccinated chicks develop it from being exposed prior to developing immunities.

So the big question is: Do I have Ben destroyed? I don't know if he could be carrying Marek's, although I don't understand how he could be, if he was hatched here and it's not transmitted through the egg.

Or I try to find a home for him and assume he's no more of a risk than any other chicken?

Anyone's thoughts and/or expertise would be appreciated.

How could he be carrying and none of your other birds are/were affected? Were they all vaccinated as peeps?

BTW, LOOOOVE rainbow lake! That's another area we looked and have stayed.
My friends, family "estate" is on the Escer?? (spelliong) out on Rainbow Lake. I've been goiong there sionce aboiut 1978 or so.
I think there are only 1 or 2 on the east coast .
It has 2 guest houses we could all live in. One for the boys and one for the girls as well as a 10 bathroom great camp. All bedrooms have their own bathroom.
My dh does the plumbing for them when we go if there is one.LOL

A Victorian style lake house. I have no words but to say I want to live and be burried there. Not gonna happen.

Accessible by only snow shoes in the winter.

We used to do New Years Eve. fireworks out over the lake. Every guest/family had their own bedroom to sleep over with private bath if they didn't
want to treck out late at night. No heat but for fireplaces and wood stoves. LOL No-one cared by midnight!

1 nasty ppock/dirt road in and out from the paved road. Really long too and i've been stuck more then once and had to be winched out.
10 bathrooms all in a different colors. Can you even stand it? The seafoam green was always my favorite.

I am really home sick now.........

Suzanne, logic would suggest that Ben is not a higher risk than any other healthy chicken. He can't possibly have Marek's if it is not transmitted through the egg. I think he is in the clear and should not be a problem in another flock. Just my two cents...

When you and Roberta put your heads together I believe you will come to the same conclusion.

Hi Al!

It makes sense to me. Hopefully there isn't a "Marek's loophole" hidden somewhere for poor Ben's sake.

I understand the concern of passing on Mareks, but I also think Ben should be ok to rehome.
