My parents are gone 2 days, on their road trip to AZ,
so what's for dinner? PIZZA ! Kinda sad. I'm a good cook
but what's the point of cooking for one.

My chickens like pizza too :D

I sent the little girls out to play this afternoon. They didn't know what to do at first, but caught on pretty quick.

The fabulous Lola.

That's Lavinia in the middle. Does she look rooish? She was hatched 5/1, so she's 6 weeks old. Wouldn't she have big wattles and a comb if she were a he?

The big girls were happy to be out for a while today too. They picked up the mowed grass, not the actual grass plants. Bobby still freaked out when he saw them out there!

Spent some quality time watching everyone free range. And this is why I love my yard:

These are only 4 weeks old. They ACT like Roos too. Very bossy. Stand in front of the other chicks when I feed / clean. (Hatched 5/14)
The spotted guy's comb looks red in person.

I think Lavinia is a girl, based on my younger ones having more comb and color. And ATTITUDE. They gotta go soon. They even try to boss around the 2 big girls.
They pulled each others tail feathers out too.

Hey Donna, I want a Redneck New York State tee now, ok? :)

Was listening to Country XM radio in the backyard while wearing my overalls and "Got Rhubarb?" shirt on and I thought I want that, surely there are many others who want it too. Get some made up and sell them at the state fair in August. Just don't put the Southern Cross flag on it. Maybe Statue of Liberty wearing a bandanna? The NY state flag indian holding a pitchfork?

Did I post the pic of the Northern Flicker that got stuck in our strawberry netting? The good news is it got free very easily and unscathed. Also I trapped a baby raccoon this morning instead of the remaining fox. Oops. He's going to be released to a state park this afternoon, hurray.

Dumped the contents of the weed bag, dirt, worms and all, into the chicken run and after they got done freaking out over the big green thing in their house they got very quiet and got to picking apart the goodies. If only I could train them to delicately weed the veggie plot!

PS and yes, I am true to form and I fed the 'coon some dog food while he is awaiting transport. Not gourmet bologna but still, can't let a guest leave hungry, right?
Since my girls can't get out much anymore due to the raccoons, anybody know what plant I can put in a planter and hang in middle of their pen to pick on? Guess I can do any kind of vine like peas or cukes and let them hang?

Cukes grow pretty fast, so they would be a good choice. I was buying heads of cabbage (only .39 a pound) to give them greens. A friend with a farm stand told me she'd save the leftovers/wilted/trimmed things for me to give the girls. She also suggested making friends with the produce manager at my local supermarket and asking for the trimmings. Apparently there's a lot of waste. I planted collard greens, spinach, escarole, kale, etc. around the edges of my garden to feed the girls. And in the flower boxes on the front of the coop. I also bought some kind of mixed greens plant (lettuce type), but I've been eating that myself. It replenishes itself quickly, so that would be a good choice too. I hung a wire basket from a bungee cord in the coop and put greens in it every morning for them to pick on. Or I just play cabbage bowling with them. They love it.
