Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Today I baked a chocolate cake, made a broccoli/cheddar quiche, did up a batch of pumpkin butter and baked an apple pie. Tomorrow's plan? Ice the cake and make apple butter.

I have a serious problem...

I think I need Toxic's therapist.

LOLOL....yes maybe april! Oh boy they will stink to the high heavens by them toxic......wish yourself bad luck on that auction!:gig I've been there and it ain't pretty.

I may be asking a silly question here, but why can't they go out earlier?

This is dumb. What's the earliest I can put them outside? Like April ?
I'm gonna have chicks in my room for months.
But my other personality is jumping up and down.
Ooh maybe my silkie will still be broody? Hmmmm.
She can't sit 12 eggs though.
Can you tell I didn't think this through at all.
Time to call my therapist. Lol

I'll have to check my notes to see when I put mine out last year. I hatched a group last Thanksgiving and some were NN. Last year was very mild though.

Up at 12 o'clock eating steel cut oatmeal with dried cherries .all this food talk is driving me crazy . Emptied out the rest of the garden , now to get ready to plant my garlic.
I had a sweet potato from Lorettas garden last night and it was incredible. I am definitely going to try them next year. I'll put in a batch of peas then when the soil is warm I'll use that bed for the sweet potatoes.
Maybe we can get a group rate on that therapist...
I have to bring in my house plants tomorrow, that always makes me sad.

Has anyone heard from Caleb or Al?

Hi guys! I'm still here. Just been busy the past few weeks and have really fallen behind on the posts and emails that inevitably fill my inbox. It's kind of like the I Love Lucy episode with the candy that keeps coming down the conveyor belt and she just couldn't wrap them fast enough.

Our son and daughter-in-law just bought a home, and I've been trying to give them a hand getting it ready to move into. I'm offering moral support more often these days.

Hope everyone has been well. I'll be busy for the next couple of weeks as I house sit the days for them waiting for the cable, phone and other contractors to show up. They need to put in a new furnace and are in the process of getting estimates. Guess who's got to wait around for these guys to show up? I don't mind, though. I get an opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy some quiet time away from the dogs...

You all hang in there. Talk to you guys soon.

Yes,who knew there were so many delicious recipes for cabbage out there! Lol! Suzanne I'm coming for dinner save me some cake.

Al, you're a good dad and a Great father in law. :D

The temps have to be consistently mild and the chicks need to be fully feathered. Without a mama hen to cover them, the down isn't insulating enough. Think when you would put out tomato seedlings, around then.

On that note, what is your current plan for your chicks?

If winter is kind like last year you might be ok. But transitioning youngsters into a frigid environment after being indoors doesn't give them the time to get accustomed to the cold without additional protection so they can seek warmth. If you can place a light in the coop where they can get that you should be ok.

PUMPKIN BUTTER??? Ok, I need that recipe, STAT! (pleeeeeeeease??) This morning, I made cinnamon apple slices to put on ice cream. I don't have much time today-my middle sons football team has a multi team scrimmage today at 3;30 and he's still on the team even if he can't play, so I'm going unless it's pouring. Then littlest man has practice at 5:30. I have to make dinner, and do some shopping for basics. I have no breakfast foods at all...

I'm going to make more Jalepenos tomorrow, I've heard Jalepeno jelly is a big one.

Tomorrow morning my sons has his appointment at the concussion clinic. I'm hoping he's good to go. The sideline sitting is making him nuts-he's not that kid.
