No but I have 2 light Brahmas I got from Agway, about 3 weeks old now....
And Necklace is a Delaware, but she's a brat.

And note to self, and anyone wondering...
Next time you sew up a chicken with giant holes in it. DO NOT use black thread on a black chicken!
Of course I ordered sutures, but the sewing kit worked out well.
I just hope I got all the thread out!

How silly would I sound????

Ive actually been wondering about some spring peeps myself......and omgosh..... what KIND this time around!

I really like "pencilled" birds and partridge etc. A white orp is likely on the list as well.

Truthfully it's so easy letting the broody moms do all the work. BUT....the drawback is the peeps are not at all tame like hatch/hand raised are. Not even close..........takes them a long time to let you gain their trust and come close....even handing out treats. They don't seem to ever want to be picked up and held either. I prefer friendly birds.
My little incubator peeps (2 at 4 months old)are now out with the bigger girls. They still all come runnng for me to pet them and hand feed them.

Does anyone have a delaware hen? I really like mine! I have 1 that was a gift and she is becoming beautiful and is really friendly.

Well...have fun no matter what!
I like the sweet tame babies too. My girl, May is the most affectionate chicken! When I toss out seed or something and the other girls go chasing it-May waits to eat from my hand while on my lap. She just watches them run and looks at me like "That's fine for THEM, but I know you have something special for ME!"

We should all do a group hatch! good grief ONLY KIDDING!!!!!.

Nothing like a spoiled chicken to make your day and bring out a smile.

Ok so I checked over Nutmeg (Peanut as some of you seem to know her

) and she is a-ok. One nasty looking bald spot where all the feathers got ripped out but otherwise no tears or holes in her. Phew! I think for sure it was luck that the hawk went after her with all of her flock mates around since they raised up quite a storm of protest. Mags, my Delaware Ruthie is the flock leader and she is the best. Pushy? Yes, but so sweet to me and protective of the others, even if she occasionally knocks them on the comb to remind them who's on top. If I had room for a rooster I'd have Delawares for sure. She is also a very consistent layer, giving me one very nice light brown egg every morning, even if it is on the small side. She is also filled out quickly, second only to the White Rock, so if you have a mixed flock with cockerels they'd be nice to process by the end of summer. I keep thinking that that is it, I've fallen in love with my last breed of chicken only to discover one more that is so sweet and special in its own way. I don't have the time for fancy ones like Polish or Silkies but even with just the basic dual purpose breeds there is so much to love... Chicken love, la la la la!

I really don't know how I could even find out all the folks around here who lost their chickens. Many keep their chickens under wraps being afraid of complaints of rodents etc.

Also.....they are not even re-building at least 500 of those downed/wrecked homes on the Zone A beach evacuation area. I am sure those numbers will rise as well. folks are being paid to relocate . Some are more than happy for a new chance.

So many more won't even leave their wrecked homes yet. They live on generators running electric or simply living without as the city cannot bring them power without first fixing roads/sewers/and so much more to even make electric safe. Some blocks have 1 home left standing.

We have a large "dead zone" that I don't think folks even understand entirely yet. Cops all pover, ciurfews, no street lights etc.
3 Hot meals a day and everyday supplies are still being given out to thousands and I see no end to coming it soon. Kids can't even get to school because they have been relocated with relatives and don't live near by......what a mess.

An example. Before I moved into this old house 2 years ago (just yesterday).....I lived next door to my girlfriend. She lost her house. It is the neighboring home in my chicken vodeo linked below. They were rescued by a fire truck after the wave hit out of their second floor window. Her car landed on top of his Avalanch truck in their driveway.

She is a realtor and just today got an apartment for herself, 7 year old and husband. And she has connections....it did help her thankfully.

These homes were not even in the Zone A evacuation area. We never had water problems there but some basement leakage duirg bad hurricanes etc.

Sorry.....really off topic but it feels good to vent.

Maggie, I am sorry for all that you and your friends are going through. I think unfortunately it is easy for us to forget how bad it is since we all still have our houses. Please do insist that your sons wear face masks, they are risking a lot by going without them.

For the record people, no-one has yet *asked* for more chickens, I just know all of you and your incubatin' ways..... I was being a bit of a devil and suggesting/encouraging you all.... hee hee... let's wait and make sure the people have homes first.

Maggie if there is anything going on for Christmas that I can donate towards please let me know. I can get food or money together from Westchester, just tell me. Also I have a box of the girls' clothes to donate, sizes 2-3 so if you know someone that needs it and has somewhere to put it tell me. Already passed on the coats and sweaters though.

Vent away, that's what we're here for!

I really am glad Nutmeg is okay.. Love the name! We've had hawk issues but they haven't actually gotten any. I hope to keep it that way.

I'm happy to coordinate a chicken repopulation effort, as secondary in importance as it is to people's homes and other possessions.. If anyone knows of anyone in need let me know and I'll start a list. I have turned into a hatching addict..

Wow. Lots of posts today!

Maggie, it's inconceivable to me that people's homes are just GONE. I know it was bad, but I guess I hadn't really thought about not getting their houses back and having to relocate. Sure makes me grateful. I'm helping a friend move into a smaller house and we've been getting rid of a lot of stuff. The backseat of my car is loaded with coats and blankets to give to a local church which is collecting for Sandy victims.

Heather, so glad Nutmeg is okay. Those hawk attacks are SCARY!!
