Special chick...please be a pullet! *New Pics!*

What a mess and what a "Lucky" girl you have! I'm so sorry for the mess you had to clean up and for the loss of your chicks. Glad your house didn't catch too! I have RIR and Sex Links and she's a little different in coloring then mine. I'd bet money she lays eggs tho!

So I'm the only one guessing roo huh?

So happy you had one baby survive. I can't be of much help with gender, but she looks like a she to me. The comb isn't very prominent or turning red from the looks of the pic. I hope that she is a she just so you can keep her!

I was guessing pullet, but after this statement, I might have to change my mind... My babies right now are only 2 weeks old, so it's hard for me to compare...I guess I need to go back and look at my pics from last year's chicks at that age.

It's hard for me to look at a pic to tell...easier to compare to other chicks the same age.

Some things to look for on a 4-5 week old roo are:

Obviously, the comb will be slightly larger and pinker on a roo
Little wattles coming in
Thicker legs
Slower feathering on wings and tail

Attitude: My roos have been more outgoing and more curious...they will come up to my hand in the brooder while the girls all run to the corner. This isn't always true though, I had a very outgoing Leghorn hen who would jump in my lap.

It's still too young to see hackle and saddle feathers

Wow what a story......So lucky to have one survive. Just wondering why you can't keep a roo?
If it is a roo can you give him to the fireman to keep at the fire station? He could be like a stop drop and roll dogs. Except he could share his story to teach children about the danger of fire. Just a thought.
Hoping it is a Girl........

That is a fantastic idea. With the pictures of the fire, it would be a great way to teach children about fire.

I think it's a Production Red. Not dark enough for RIR. And I'm sorry, but I too think it's a cockeral. That baby deserves a fine life after surviving that.
