Anyone getting spring chicks this year!? I placed my order about a week and a half ago and I am impatiently waiting! Lol I am getting 5 chicks from Meyer Hatchery with a hatch date of April 29th and I am so excited!!! We already have 7 chickens from Meyer Hatchery and I love them. They just turned 3 in October. I am excited to meet the new little babies. April can’t come soon enough! Lol

We currently have 1 Barred Rock, 2 Black Australorps, 2 Buff Orpingtons, and 2 Easter Eggers.

The new chicks are one each of Speckled Sussex, Delaware, Easter Egger, White Leghorn, and Partridge Rock.

Sooo excited. :D

Anyone else getting chicks this spring!?

I have five hens now- most are getting up there in years. Two leghorns, one Brahma, one barred rock and one Australorp. My Australorp is an amazingly sweet hen, but she’s also very broody. If I were more patient, I’d get her some eggs to sit on next time she goes broody. But then I’d probably hatch more roosters and I don’t need a repeat of the Rooster Debacle of 2017.

Now I must know... what was the Rooster Debacle of 2017? :pop

Do you mean dark as in night time?

Northern and Southern Hemispheres don’t really have anything to do with the time. The reason America is so far behind from the rest of the world is because it’s far to the west. That’s why the reason New Zealand is so far ahead in time is because we’re off to the east. Like parts of Western Australia have the same zone as China despite China being far north.

That’s true! Forgot about that. Sorry, was somewhat meaning specifically New Zealand and America in my example rather than the specific hemispheres since you’re from NZ but forgot to specify.

I have 18 polish and easter eggers ordered from Meyers for June 3. I can't wait.

Awesome!! I love my EEs from there :D

I am hoping to get some new bantam chicks from MPC to raise over the summer!! :)

Nice! Any specific breed?

WE are gonna get three or four more! I love Meyer Hatchery and have gotten several from there, I like their extra free "mealmaker" chick, and all the variety! Plus it's a fun day to just go there and maybe get some from the store bin too. The only thing that I'm disappointed with at Meyer is that the past two times we've gotten "all pullets" from there, we've gotten at least one rooster, and, in the last order, two, roosters. They do make it good if that happens, but geesh, I don't want any more roosters! I think this spring I'm gonna get them from our feed mill locally. THEY are starting their chick days in February, which I think is too early..but we'll see what they have! Never fails to be exciting..it's like Christmas morning, getting new chickies!

How exciting!! It really is like Christmas morning! LOL that’s unfortunate about the roosters :( this year they apparently have a new 100% gender accuracy policy so they try to get it 100% but chicks are animals so if they get it wrong, they will refund you or send you a replacement chick. So they do try to make it right, which is cool, but like you said, then you still have the roos. It doesn’t really address the situation of having the roos. You still have to do something about them, whether it’s keep them, or rehome them, or eat them, or whatever. Still need to be dealt with. Which is definitely a pain!! But that said, my order was all females, even the extra mealmaker chick, and it was the same breed as some of the others, so that was cool. Can’t wait to see what this order is. I wish I was close enough to pick up chicks!!

My chicks will be here first week of March! Can’t wait for my fluff butts to get here! Ordered two more EE’s, couple assorted white layers, a Golden and a silver laced Wyandotte, midnight majesty maran, starlight green Egger, sapphire olive Egger, and a white crested blue polish. Was trying to add some much needed color to my egg basket full of brown eggs

Awesome!! You will have a nice egg basket for sure!! That’s why I ordered a leghorn and another EE. I like having the color lol

Ordered from Cackle about a month ago.
40 ISA browns
20 white leghorns,
6 turkens
and 10 BB white turkeys.. Suppose to come on the 15th :woot:woot

I also ordered a whole bunch of hatching eggs,
20+ Tolbunt polish (Frizzled & smooth)
10+ Cream crested legbars
15 call duck eggs (Which i've just set in the incubator~)
and 6+ lavender orpington eggs~
Will be setting them on the 10th :jumpy:jumpy

Plan on getting some emu chicks very soon too~!

Wow that’s a lot of birds!!! that’s awesome though!! Do you plan on keeping them all or will you sell some? Are the turkeys gonna be meat birds? Emus!? That’s cool!! What do people do with them?

Yes. Our day is your night. Most people here in America are on during the day. By the time you get to day we are all sleeping. I think. :) I don't know why I said northern hemisphere, that has to do with seasons. It was late here. :idunno

Yup, unless you’re a night owl like me lol

X2 lol

I ordered 4 EE girls and 4 Black Jersey Giants (straight run) from a hatchery I'll drive to for pickup, end of Feb!

Awesome! I love EEs. They are so much fun to watch grow up. :D I wish I lived close enough to a hatchery to pick up but that could be dangerous LOL

I'm getting 2 Silver Spangled Appenzeller spitzhauben because they are so pretty and I love the name, 2 Buckeyes in honor of my step-father, 2 barnvelders, 2 silver laced Wyandottes and one Splash Marans. I'm going to get black copper Marans from my feed store when they come in.

That is definitely a cool name!! And those are nice reasons for getting those birds :)

Unfortunately I'm not ordering any chicks this year :hit

Aww I’m sorry :(

:(,,,no chicks for you.

:(

That's okay, I have 33 right now :)

What breeds?

I had a VERY determined broody hen so I relented and ive put a few bantam eggs under her. Hatch date in a few weeks .im excited too. Its my first time with chicks.

Awwww so sweet! Good luck with the chicks!

Now I must know... what was the Rooster Debacle of 2017? :pop

My SIL had a friend with some extra chicks to give away (warning: free chicks are not always a good thing :old ). So I said - yeah! I’ll take all the ones she has, figuring my friend with a local farm would take any that I didn’t want.

So I ended up with like 22 baby chicks, maybe a week old. I kept 5 and my friend took the remaining ones. I was bummed when the first one crowed. Then the second. And then those wonderful posters here started clueing me in to saddle feathers...

My friend that took the other 17 chicks? All roosters. Clearly the woman had sorted out the roosters and I was the lucky recipient.

I rehomed three and two were just mean well before I figured their hormones would kick in, so I learned how to cull.

Dh was less than happy with my first chick raising experiment. :lau
