Wow that’s a lot of birds!!! that’s awesome though!! Do you plan on keeping them all or will you sell some? Are the turkeys gonna be meat birds? Emus!? That’s cool!! What do people do with them?
Lots of birds~!
I'll sell any extra roos I get from the hatching eggs but besides that i'm keeping everyone :)The layers will be replacing my older girls once they start laying. The turkeys are going to be pasture-raised for meat~ And the emus are just going to be pets, hopefully i'll get an unrelated pair so I can breed them myself later in the future~

That’s awesome!! I wish I could have that many birds! Lol my new chicks are replacing my older girls too, just on a much smaller scale ha and I am still keeping all my older girls since I am attached. Nice! I bet those will taste good lol have you ever raised them before? And aw cool!! :)

My SIL had a friend with some extra chicks to give away (warning: free chicks are not always a good thing :old ). So I said - yeah! I’ll take all the ones she has, figuring my friend with a local farm would take any that I didn’t want.

So I ended up with like 22 baby chicks, maybe a week old. I kept 5 and my friend took the remaining ones. I was bummed when the first one crowed. Then the second. And then those wonderful posters here started clueing me in to saddle feathers...

My friend that took the other 17 chicks? All roosters. Clearly the woman had sorted out the roosters and I was the lucky recipient.

I rehomed three and two were just mean well before I figured their hormones would kick in, so I learned how to cull.

Dh was less than happy with my first chick raising experiment. :lau

Oh wow! That’s ridiculous! Lol either you have REALLY bad luck or she knew how to sex them and just didn’t bother to tell you! Lol if it’s the latter, what a jerk!

If I could i'd keep my older girls too ~ I've raised heritage chickens and turkeys before but never BBs. So it's all new to me (Sort of) I have a bb bronze hen but she's strictly a pet~ Friendliest bird I own :wee

So how you gonna eat them? They are all gonna be friendly.

That's the one thing i'm nervous about.. I might end up keeping one but i'll just have to suck it up and get over with when the time comes. I've done it before with chickens so I think i'll do fine with the turkeys..
Turkeys are harder to catch, hold and kill. Chickens are easier and quicker. You end up with too much time to change your mind with turkeys. Hopefully they are an obnoxious batch that drive you bananas. :hmm I haven't had broad breasted either, only heritage. Should be interesting to see how it goes for you.

Thats too bad! To raise and feed them to realize your inexperience was taken advantage of just so she could rid herself of the boys. What did your SIL say when you told her what this friend did?

mmm... guessing a jerk. unikely to have 22 out of 22 be males in any kind of straight run. Could happen, but....odds would be low.
