Ready for our 5 Meyer Hatchery chicks this week

5 Ameraucanas ( Easter Eggers).
10 Australops
10 Isa Browns
10 Plymouth Blue Rocks

Nice!! Those are all nice breeds!! I wanted to try ISA Browns this year but didn’t want to place a separate order from another hatchery and TSC’s minimum is 6 here. So I didn’t. But maybe one day. I already have most of the other breeds though and I love them. I have 2 Black Australorps, 2 Easter Eggers, 2 Buff Orpingtons (was 3), and a Barred Rock. I didn’t used to like my Australorps that much, they were loud and kinda mean, and they’re still loud and a bit pecky but they’ve gotten better with more space and now they’re the only ones that squat for me to catch them lol and I like talking to them all now :lau  and I love my Barred Rock. She is very smart. And of course I love the colored eggs from the EEs. Personality wise they can be a bit skittish but they seem very curious. Anyway, the new chicks that are coming in just under 2 weeks are one each of Delaware, White Leghorn, Easter Egger, Speckled Sussex, and Partridge Rock. I liked the EEs and Rocks enough to add more and I’ve wanted to try the SS for a while so I’m super excited :D the leghorn is just for the egg laying ability but I’ve heard their personalities are pretty cool too and they might be good to help keep them safe free ranging. Plus the white eggs will add some nice color. As will the third Easter Egger. :D Delaware I just thought looked like a cool breed and I’ve heard good things so figured I’d try it. I think you will like your breed choices!! I love my Rocks and EEs.

I’ve had Delaware’s before, they are a little stand offish but they lay huge (x large ) eggs. I had white leg horns too kinda crazy, friendly enough they can be very hard to catch but very dependable layers.

Also idk this is normal but I’ve been seeing my EE mount my Orpington lately? I’ve seen it happen twice within the last couple weeks and then I think I’ve seen it happen one other time. All while free ranging. The last time until recently I think was last year, like the fall maybe. I always thought she was lowest in the pecking order and she used to get bullied a lot but now she seems to sometimes bully the others. I have seen her peck pretty mean too. With the mounting she literally stands on top of her with her wings out and pecks her head and everything and the BO just squats for her then she gets off and BO shakes off. Just like a rooster would. But she’s not a rooster. Sometimes she stays up there kind of a while too. And yesterday my BR ran over to see what was going on but instead of helping, she gave her (BO) a quick peck on the head too while EE was still up there

In my mind, there are two possible causes for this behavior: one of the BOs got taken by a hawk fall 2017 and she was tiny physically and I believe lowest on the pecking order so maybe the EE moved up and doesn’t want to go back? And because she’s been bullied, learned how to be one?? I believe this may be the cause because I had witnessed some kind of bully like behaviors from her even in the previous space that surprised me so it’s been a while. But option two is that I moved them into their new coop and run a year ago (April 2018) and now they have MUCH more space than before (the other one was way too small) so maybe now that she is not being bullied anymore and the others are a little better tempered, she feels the need to take the role or something?? Or maybe it is a combination of both? She is laying so I don’t think she’s turning rooster. Though she did only start 2-3 weeks ago after a 7+ month break.

I know some pecking order stuff is normal but I don’t want my poor Orpingtons being beat up. Seems to be mostly one. And plus I am worried about adding the new chicks with this behavior.

Aw that’s a little disappointing neither of them are super friendly but then again I don’t really spend as much time as I used to with my current ones so mine could be friendlier too. That’s good about the eggs though!! Getting them all to add some fresh blood/new layers cause mine are all 3 1/2.
