Quote: Anconas are lovely!

The Ancona is a hardy, adaptable, all-purpose duck. It is an excellent layer, typically laying 210-280 white, cream, or blue eggs yearly. The Ancona also grows relatively quickly, and produces high quality meat that is more flavorful and less fatty than that of most Pekin ducks. Anconas are well suited for situations where they can forage for some of their food and are capable of eating large "banana" slugs. "They make excellent pond or yard ducks since they tend to stay close to home, do not fly under normal conditions and are large enough so that they are less likely to be preyed upon by winged predators. Typically they have moderately calm temperaments and make fine pets." (Holderread, 2001)

Incubation update - Day 12 of First Incubation
History: 12 eggs from neighbors farm
18 eggs from Farmers Market, sold as fertile
30 eggs set, Due 3/31 - 4/1 (I set late at night)

Current: 12 infertile, all Farmers Market (Egtopsy results)
11 Neighbor eggs seem to be developing, 1 Hard to tell Welsummer
6 Farmers Market appear to be developing

This is my daughters science project for her genius hour; compare hatching store eggs, farmers market eggs and micro/hobby farm eggs. At our store all egg brands said they were infertile so I didn't set them, I cracked them open and they were infertile. So far it is going great I think.
how are your air cells looking? @mamahmendez what is humidity currently?

Quote: I know what your talking about feral cats and dogs ... Every year I loose chickens to them and of course the dread fox. Mr Smart One. Just this week I Two pullets (POL) out of a enclosed pen. Wind must loosen the twine about 8 foot off the ground. Ferel cats did the deed. One I found where the ferels eat. One was just gone. 2 were very badly damaged. My salmon fava pullets head was all tore up, tongue was hanging out of her neck. Really gross. Have picture but they are gross. She was alive so I sewed her back together again. tongue inside mouth, waddles back up where they should be, chest and neck skin back to. She looks like a patch work But the good thing is she is eating and drinking back out in the pen. I really can't believe she lived though the patch job. Time will tell if she makes it without infection getting her.
Now while the fixing of the pen was going on I found a patch of skin and white spot black feathers it was about 4 inches long and 2 inches wide. the hen that color was in the pen I figured it must have been one of the neighbors hens. Later to discover it was my hen. There was nothing left to fix on her just doctor her and she still alive.
Makes you want to get a shotgun and blow them away. I am going to trap the ferals dogs and cats and haul them to the pound. there is 3 derel chihuahuas a renter next store That have to going. Wild as March hares and chicken killing son of guns They have to go.
Ok I have to close I have rant enough Boy I feel better Already work is waiting....

So along with what I have in my incubator I now have 2 broody hens that are sitting on eggs! A Buff Silkie Bantam with 3 Buff Orpington eggs under her and a Swedish Flower hen with 3 Buff Orpington eggs, 1 Easter Egger egg, and 1 of her own eggs.

Quote: interesting!!!

I have one question
Does this have to be done with an incubator?
I do have an incubator but,
The reason I'm asking is because I have
A broody pekin bantam and I hope
To set cream legbar eggs under her.
So can I enter with her?
Thanks
WELCOME!!!!!!!

I hope she makes it I had an austrolorp impale herself on a piece of wire last year went right through her mouth and came of her neck I patched her up and she lived but man it was bad. I used those butterfly sutures and a lot of gauze and medical tape

Those are all the reasons I am hatching Anconas too!!! My humidity is currenty 35% it stayed around there +-2%. It did go to 42% during a Texas monsoon. Based on wjat I have researched the humidity should be pkay during this phase, but I could be wrong and happy to adjust. I know the humidity is what determines air cell development. The air cells look good to me. I was able to mark them. I don't know if you can tell from.the photos below but I tried to show you. The infertile eggs dont surprise me i bought them right there at the farmers market. And there was no bullseye when i cracked them. So far I haven't found any that seem to have developed and died. I won't candle again until day 18 unless I need to or smell something funky.
