Squatting Cockerel

Hhhhmmmm.... you’re sure it’s not a female? I’ve never heard a sex linked that looks like that. But then again idk I’m still learning about genetics and coloring and all that.
You've never heard of a black sex link?

I have. I own several of them, for many years. I didn’t know a sex link could have feathered feet... take it easy on me I’m learning. Please don’t be nasty I’ve had a very difficult day.
Black sex link can be used as a general term for any offspring of a black barred hen x unbarred rooster. The most common cross is of a barred rock hen x Rhode Island red rooster, creating the classic hatchery BSL.

Ok thanks for explaining; I thought a BSL was what you described (the RIR / barred rock).... I didn’t realize that was just the most common and that there were variations. I’m desperate to learn bc I want to make my own sex links. Ok that’s all, don’t want to monopolize the OPs thread, I can be guilty of that.
Thank you for being kind.

No worries, darling! Hijack away! I don't think I'm going to get very far with this line of inquiry anyway ;) Once I've got a 5year tag, maybe someone will believe I've had a chicken or two and I'm not raising my first brood.
And the BSL info just backs up the fact that this boy is a boy, even if he's acting more pullety than his (suspected) sisters! Time will answer my questions! :thumbsup

Lol, I guess you’re right... time will tell. Patience - one thing chicken owners don’t have when it comes to this age old question 😄

Well. Yes. I do know what a cockerel vs rooster is. My question was do you have any experience with a cockerel who squatted GROWING up manly.
I’ve had two instances of roosters mounting other roosters. Oddly, in one of those, the one mounting was a lower ranking cockerel than the rooster he was mounting. It was a behavior that I believe was brought on by boredom due to their temporary housing.
However, I’ve never had a cockerel squat like a hen for me. Though I can tell you that the rooster being mounted in the above situation lacked no rooster characteristics (he was even human aggressive).

Animals can do all sorts of odd and unexpected things. I've had female dogs mount other dogs and go to down like a male. I've seen bulls, roosters, male dogs, all mount each other (to be clear, within their own species haaaa) without seeming to be bothered by the arrangement. They were probably bored, engaged in some kind of social behavior beyond human ken, or just messing with me for funsies. Who knows?

He could also possibly have a hormone problem or just be a late bloomer. Give him time, perhaps away from the boys and give him some ladies his age if you can and see if anything develops.

Obviously I'm really late to this thread...

Does anyone have a rooster or cockerel that squatted? Do I not count on this little guy to be able to do the deed?

Yes, I once had a cockerel that squatted.
It was a Red Shouldered White Yokohama, and for quite a while I was sure the hatchery had mis-sexed him!
Like yours, it looked just like a pullet or hen squatting.

But he grew up to be a gorgeous rooster who acted normally, sired chicks, had male saddle feathers and a nice long tail, and so on.

Time will answer my questions!
Has he grown into normal male behavior yet?
