The problem is, we know no background on this dog, his owner, the man who shot him and all the details of what happened this time. Nor do we know if this man has had this happen before, even if it was another dog. This dog could have been there before, it might just not have made the article, though if it had killed before, that probably would have been mentioned. Belate could have had many dog attacks and been so fed it he couldn't take another. We shouldn't judge what we would do without knowing all the details or walking in his shoes.

The bottom line is, the law is on his side, period.

Belate lives nearby and told authorities he shot the dog after he attacked and killed his chickens.

Yeah, I missed that...but there was the part in the article about the man providing proof. He'll need to be coughing up some chewed up chickens me thinks. Something seemed a little off to me about this article. A lot of folks are a little trigger happy and entirely too quick to kill.​

Iwas going to let this one pass, but now I can't. Yup, I am that ole trigger happy fool. There are some dogs that are more than welcome on my property and one is just a pup. Those are the ones that I know that won't go after my livestock. The others that come here DO NOT LEAVE. Only had a few owners ever really put up much or a fuss. Only one bumb fool even threatened me knowing I was armed at the time. He was still laying on the ground when the officers got here to take him off to jail. He still thinks he is right, but his house is up for sale. (movin back to SF where only the gang members have guns) I COULD CARE LESS WHAT SOMEONE THINKS, BE IT MAN OR BEAST, MESS WITH MY FAMILY OR CRITTERS AND YOU WILL PAY THE PRICE.

Some general comments--A dog on its own property is a pet. A dog on someone else's property is a predator. It's really that simple. I know that there are occasions when a dog may escape his property, but 99% of the time, the dog is on your property because the owner habitually lets it roam or does not fix the chink in the armor that allows it to escape time and time again. Plus, a dog without a collar and tag is no one's pet. It is a stray as far as I'm concerned. A dog in the act of killing my birds is definitely a predator and subject to whatever I deem necessary at the time to stop the attack at the time. I keep guns and a baseball bat handy for that, but luckily, such an occasion hasn't arisen yet for us. I will tell you that I will not approach and try to grab a strange dog in a killing frenzy just so I don't have to use deadly force. Shooting over its head is not an option since we do have nearby neighbors and I'd rather kill a dog than have a stray bullet kill a human being.

In regard to the story that started this thread, there are many variables that are probably not laid out in that story, so it's hard to judge the situation.

if a dog comes ALL the time into your yard... and the owners dont care..they just let then roam the neighborhood...well then, you DO need to do something..
i understand that,...
But i think that we are talking about a dog that was in this neighbors yard ONE time.... not several times. So there is a difference...
