SSS...and then bury it deeper? Did anyone see this??

Right now he's mad because I shot in the air with birdshot to get his wandering Labs attention. Never pointed anywhere near them. That time. He saw the whole thing, including his dogs running at my coop

Heh - if you lived next door to us and shot in the air, it would definitely get my lab's attention. He'd come running to you. He loves to hunt, but is GREAT with my chickens.

To be honest I think shooting the dog was appropriate. Once a dog gets a taste it will come back. Or go to your house next. How humane was it for the dog to rip the throats out of his chickens. Also this is a split decision kinda thing. Whats to say this dog wouldn't have turned on the chicken owner. Did he really have time to look around for BB pellets or to try something else? The real story is if any of his chickens survived due to his quick action. Once a dog goes rogue who knows what it would go after next. A goat? A toddler? Who gets to decide how much is too much. If the dog owner loved his pet he should have kept him on his property. It really ends up on his head.

As someone on here said once, when you decide to raise chickens, you have to choose a side.
A big dog, charging in on a flock of chickens, can do a LOT of damage very quickly.
A BB gun is going to do very little against all of the doggy adrenalin, not to mention a dog zig-zagging through a flock of chickens is a tough shot.
I keep a fully loaded, eight round 12 gauge pump shotgun with me within reach when my chickens are out. If I have time for a warning shot, and it works, fine. If not, well....so be it. The dog is in my yard because of someone else's bad choices, not mine.

Interesting thread here I think the article leaves alot to be speculated on first seems there was alot more going on here than meets the eye... That being said when one decides to shoot a neighbors pet assuming one knows its the neighbors pet there needs to be more than one thought first in this dfay and age everyone has a cell camera and everyone is nosy and if you shoot odds are someone saw it even in the country folks are nosy and talk... If this was the first time i saw the dog Id probably also go to the owners and say hey what the heck is this??? now in this day and age Im not sure SSS works anymore if your nearest neighbor is 2 miles away it might you have 2 or more houses nearby and your outside assume your being watched. Heres the other problem with this deal my hunch is the shooter more than likely never photographed the scene other problem NO LAW ENFORCEMENT CALLED!!!! I sure do not want to go to court on my word that the dog was over here Id photo all and to be honest if I know its legal in the state to shoot why not call the police cover your butt... Heres how this could play out and its a lesson to us all first if the article is correct there is probably no photos taken and the guy just shot and burried the dog no law enforcement called so its my word vs yours all I need to say is you shot the dog in my yard and dragged it over etc... Theres also the matter of the chickens without photos of the dead birds nor a police report did the birds get killed or even ran off Id love to have pics of the dog in the yard or the dog with a dead bird in my mouth... Now if it goes to court Im out what 5K in legal expenses now I have no photos and I have no police report so its my word vs his now when his child gets on the stand looks at those 12 jurors an with tears in his eyes says he killed my best friend Im cooked right!!!!! With photos Im on the winning side. Now lets look at the neighbor issue think if my house is on fire that neighbor will call the fire dept If Im yellin out back cause Im hurt think hes callin an ambulance... Now sounds like the guy is holdin a grudge wouldnt be suprised if my dog ends up shot next or maybe that mysterious fox burns the hen house down... Point is when dealing with any predator there are times when shoot now and fast is correct and when hold your fire grab the dog and talk is preferable... As a group I think we need to remember a few points.

1. Document the issue Photos and a police report
2. Letahal forse is at times necessary but talk can solve a bunch of issues too
3. If Im going to shoot a pet am I willing to live with the consequences these range from a not so neighborly neighbor to my chickens dissappear my dog shor car trashedWHO KNOWS!!!
4. If I do shoot have I done everything to avoid it and after I shoot do I document the scene to cover my but.
5. If I shoot I may end up in front of a jury can I prove I was right to do this and is shooting worth the legal fees... a basic civil suit can cost upwards of 5K is the negihbor wealthy and willing to spend whatever to mess with me...
6. Can I at the end feel right with the decisions I made.

Ive kiled more than my share of animals but there have been tons I didnt have to kill because I was able to find other ways in this high tech worls do not assume SS will work and the problem with the media and the world we live in is Im the jerk if I SSS and am caught... This article is one where alot can be learned.

All well and good but the problem is unless you live in the middle of no where you must assume you are being watched and if the nosy neighbor sees you your porked.. Been there done that I once had a neighbor call the ASPCA on me seems I wasnt feeding my cows and horse... You see the nosy neighbor who lives 500 feet or more away would watch me when I went out to feed em use her binocs and one week I didnt put any round bales out there well you see I was feeding them square bales that week to get rid of em well she couldnt let my animals starve and over pops the ASPCA All because she watched me and the cows and something was different ASPCA thought it was funny I didnt... You think if in broad day light I shot and killed the neighbors dog she might see it and wham Im porked my point is with game cams video cameras and cell phones unless you are certain you are alone dont be suprised who shows up...

Not sure where you are going, but if a person has the right to shoot a predator, and does so it does not matter if they are watching. Most states do not require a notification unless the predator is a protected species, such as a bear. If the cops come all a person has to do is tell the truth to the cops, end of story. It is perfectly legal though to not tell or deny to your neighbor. Burying a dispatched predator is not illegal because it is not evidence of a crime, just a dead pest.

These are 3 things that have happened on our farm in the past year.

1. Neighbor down the road has a dog pack and feeds every stray dog that comes along. Her "rescued" boxer comes over and chases cows. She has been told to keep her dogs penned up repeatly. In the boxers case it will be SSS.

2. Neighbor across the street has 5 dogs. He used to let run loose till one of them killed 3 of my chickens. He didn't pay me for the birds but did start keeping his dogs penned up. He's a fan of SSS and has shot his own dogs for what that one pulled so I'm almost surprised that Scruffy survived.

3. Someone dumped a great pyranees. Neighbor across the street almost shot it but it wasn't bothering the livestock so he didn't. We have adopted the great pyranees. She doesn't bother the chickens or cows. When she's inside she doesn't bother the cats. I'm glad the neighbor decided not to SSS her.

I have a paint ball gun. if a stray dog is in my yard, i shoot it with the paint ball. when it gets home, the owner might just realize how close the dog came to dying and keep it home.
