My husband will cut it up, i help him split it and we all stack it. We take free firewood anywhere we can!

We had a gray pine (usually called a digger pine) fall over last year. My husband split it and that is the nastiest wood ever to split. It's fibrous as heck!

I would wait 2 years to burn digger pine. They have heptane in them and need to dry out good. They are also called gasoline trees.
Digger pine needs 2 years to season
they also can create alot of creosote in your chimney

We burn manzanita - it doesn't get any hotter than that. The trick is to not burn too much of it at once.
manzanita is good as well. You are right the oils in it make it burn hot and it is super dense wood.
The problem with the Digger aka Grey , foothill or Ghost pine is it can explode but two years should dry it.
I like to use a little manzanita, with dry incense cedar to get it going hot before I put the oak or almond wood on the fire.

Without a woodstove in this house I'll just be turning on the heater. I am going to miss the woodstove. We have a big fireplace but that is not a very efficient heat source. I'll just use it for ambiance occasionally.
