I used to burn cedar all the time, I had a Fisher Baby Bear stove, I couldn't get enough of a fire going to put in an oak log. The cedar burned fast and hot, but really couldn't get it to bank a fire all night (it was my only heat source). So it was always cold in the mornings and cold when I came home from work. A drafty old house with little insulation.

But cedar, I did most of my splitting by hand and I could make kindling out of that the size of a matchstick!

yeah cold morning's.I love burning almond as well smells so good in the house

Without a woodstove in this house I'll just be turning on the heater. I am going to miss the woodstove. We have a big fireplace but that is not a very efficient heat source. I'll just use it for ambiance occasionally.

Duh, they make fireplace inserts.

Grey pine (or digger) is more fibrous than normal pines. It has a lot of oils in it as well. Tough as heck to split. But it is still pine and won't burn as well as oak or cedar. We usually mix it in with oak, so it will keep the heat all night. We wouldn't burn pine at all (because it burns dirty and really gunks up your flue), except this was a 200 foot or so tree on our property that fell over in the snow storm last winter - so why waste it.

I like to throw a empty soda can or throw some salt on the fire. helps it burn hotter quicker so less creosote

This is the tree that fell over. The whole thing uprooted. The tree to the left is also a grey pine. Thankfully, nobody was hurt when it fell. You can see our garage in the right corner when it was under construction. That oak to the left is a fully mature tree also. The manzanita in the lower left is about 15 feet tall.

I have been working, and now they have the computers set where we can not get online. (I actually did get on for about 3 minutes a couple times - then, WHAM - gone!) Storms here for 3 days and nights. My internet has been sporadic. I feel like I have been out of touch for ages!

It feels like Christmas! Thank you so much, Diva and Mary! The 5 Isi - Lukka eggs arrived and are in the 'bator! Fingers crossed for them to all hatch! The others are due to hatch Friday or Saturday.

You are so thoughtful and kind. Thank you soooo very much! I love every single item! I am rearranging and special places for each one of them!

Kathy, how did you get emu to sit up? I figured he(she) needed surgical pins in each leg so it could stand. Glad it's got a good home now. I just don't have room for an emu - what was I thinking?
