Stella's Social Club

Well Jason, you keep your chicken hawks and I'll keep my sparrow hawks. Deal?

lol how did he get in there. I put netting over my run. any hawk dive bombs this stuff will be torn to shreds. It is about 150 lb test

The net was never secured properly. In many places it was just draped over with a hog ring every few feet. When the wind would blow it would fold the netting back over the top of the fence and leave gaps. We fixed all those spots today. Now I just have to get busy with a couple hundred zip ties making it look better. The piece of netting was so large (100 feet square) that it didn't get put on straight. Michael wouldn't let me help him because I am "useless." So when he pulled it, there were lots of big folds and pleats. I was hoping it would be functional and look good but I am going to have to settle for functional.

what is nice. I used coated wire every 8 feet across the run. pulled it tight and put the netting over that. helps keep it supported and harder for critters to get through.

In addition to securing the netting, I cleaned the big brooder in the little yellow house today. Then I moved my 11 cream legbars from the basement into the little yellow house. They snuggied up under the big Ecoglow. I am worried that they will be too cold outside at only a week old so I also have the sweeter heater hung low over them and a small heat lamp up high to warm the inside of the house. I lost two of my dark egg layers the first night they were out there and I don't want a repeat of that!

Two of the boys mooned me!

My dark egg layers did great in the coop last night. I went out before going to bed and they were all tucked into the huddle box I made for them. Today they were running around and scratching in the shavings and trying to jump up on the roost in front of the nest boxes. That reminds me, I need to block off the nest boxes tomorrow so they don't get in the habit of sleeping in them. Took me forever to break the project babies from doing that!

Since moving my incubator out of the brooder house, I have room for more brooders. I wanted one in which I could separate by breed for a few days or just extra room for more chicks. I had planned to build something but my heart wasn't in it. I saw a triple nest box condo at the feed store and decided to use that as my chick brooder. I hung it on the wall above my cabinets. I am going to make wire lift up doors for the fronts and get a small Ecoglow for each one. All I have to do is drill a hole through the top for the cord and plug it into the power strip on top. The smallest chick waterer and a little feeder should fit fine right in the front. I love that there is a lip on the front to keep the shavings in. I am going to paint it white tomorrow to match the inside of the brooder house. Each box is 15' x 15". If it ends up being too small I can always convert it to a duplex and put it in the coop as a broody box. I re-homed Lukka's babies a couple of days ago so it's about time again!

The four "layers" are doing better with the Icelandics today. Yesterday they hung out in a corner by themselves and Isi tried to mate them every time they broke the huddle.I checked in on them last night to make sure they made it in before the pop door closed. They were all four on the front roost with Isi! Today they are mingling better.

Moon shot.
so what are your Dark Egg Layers?

Mine gets supported by the vinyl coated poultry wire that separates each run. I still need to attach the netting to the tops of the wire in a couple of the runs. Michael only did the ones on each side of the Icelandic run because Stella got out, of course! Yesterday when we moved the layers Michael left the gates open on the layer coop and the Icelandic coop! We had five chickens out running around at one point. I thought it was going to be difficult to get them back in but they went in pretty easily. Free ranging chicken won't live long here!

Ooh, Ooh, I forgot to tell you guys. Michael came home from the mall last night with a shiny new Apple IPad4 for me! It also has a cool cover that also becomes a stand and keyboard. Now I can bug you guys from all over the place!
