Stormcrow's Hobby Farm

Sorry for lack of posts. "Celebrated" not getting storm damage by getting sick. Opportunistic infections. Minor, but in combination, left me wiped out. Recovering. Annoyed.

Seems I can no longer go traipsing thru the woods in the wet, short on sleep, getting bit up by mosquitoes and all manner of other bitey things and expect to emerge unscathed.

Pretty much slept thru the last two days. On the mend, enjoying a coup of coffee.

Take care of yourselves!

Glad it wasn't worse and you're feeling better

We started our homestead 4 years ago. Building slowly so we will be ready when we are both retired.
That's what hubby and I did. We found this place, loved it, bought it 30 years ago. We bought more adjoining acreage (twice), and also started accumulating the things we'd need to be as self-sufficient as possible. Most of those things are expensive.

Adding up what we spent over the years (just off the top of my head), it was somewhere between $220K-$280K which might be laughably low for 25 acres here right now. That includes a (used) Jeep, the ratrod plow, lumber and building supplies for various projects, and tacking on a fudge factor for all the stuff I forgot. I doubt we could replace what we have for twice that.

I've put years into building the soil in the garden, and learning what grows well here. I have decades of experience to draw on, and that took, well, decades. I'm not starting over somewhere new.

So when I get letters and texts from someone telling me they can get my "dream price!!!!!" for our house, I laugh. Tell ya what... start mentioning numbers that start with a B, and I'll listen. I'll still say no, but I'll listen.

Mostly.

Spent the day on the tractor, fixing the driveway, rebuilding two water bars. Got the burnable trash taken care of (paper plates, feed bags, etc), mulched in the blueberries, lemon thyme, mint (need 6 more bags of mulch), some minor clean up.

Took apart the stand mixer, needs new gear set.

Turkey gets another day.

Tommorow AM I deperately need to respond to people in the feed forums from three weeks ago...

Oh, and somewhere along the way, in addition to getting bit up by mosquitos, I apparently picked up a case of ringworm - which is a pretty visible indicator of just how run down I was that I could get what is, in essence, a yeast infection. Grrrrrr.

Still need to take a goat, too. Actually, need to take two, but limited freezer space.
