Stray cat...?

I love cats, but our neighbor's cat got into our run last week and killed my rooster. I caught the dang thing in the act. They are definitely worth keeping an eye on.
Sorry to hear about your loss:hugs
You need to predator proof your run somewhat. If a cat can get in,,,,, so can soooooo many other predators. Consider a HOT WIRE, and bait it. Both cats and raccoons learn quickly to stay away.

OH yes, definitely. We had a hole in our wire that we were unaware of. It took that loss to make us hyper-aware of any nooks and crannies. I hope to get some electric fencing soon... Maybe in the spring.

Nope. None at all. It's called nature. How do you feel about birds crapping on your stuff? At least my cat buries it.
FWIW, I live in the country, not some little city lot or neighborhood where I can reach out my window and shake hands with the neighbors. Lots of stuff craps in my yard. They're called wild animals.
Yes, thankfully you do not live anywhere near me.

Birds generally do not crap on our stuff. Raccoons, skunks, wildlife, etc, is fenced off. Most native wildlife I can keep out of my yard with the fences we put up. We live in the middle of the city, and unfortunately, I can reach out and shake hands with the neighbors. I have a small yard (30 ' x 30') that I like to keep impeccable. If I lived out in the country with tons of acreage, I would feel very differently. But I don't, I'm not lucky enough or rich enough to be able to afford that. Plus, cats are not native or natural to the USA, so you cannot say 'it's nature'. Cats are an invasive species that we brought in as pets. But, since you live in the country, out far away from everyone, your cats are probably not bugging the neighbors in the first place.

I live out in the country. Cats come and poop in my garden all the time. Again, I shoot them. And no, it's not "natural". They are an invasive species that are supposed to be indoor pets, not outdoor pests. I am so glad you don't live near me either!

I live in the suburb and they poop in my front garden mulch where the dogs then go sniff them out for a snack. :T It's not very nice. And given that they harass my chickens and eat my chicks I'm happy to have them stay away from my property. In the back yard the fence and dogs mostly keep them out.
Mostly.

Oh and hotwire/barbedwire/tops are illegal here. I already have a 6' wood fence. So yer predator proofing being on me argument only goes so far.

Yeah, glad you don't live near me, either. We wouldn't be buddies. I won't even bother trying to change your flawed logic that cats are supposed to be indoor pets or that it's unnatural for them to bury their scat.

I have indoor-outdoor cats that haven’t bothered any of the 60 chicks I’ve raised indoors this year, and they have easy access. I have 2 feral cats, different ones at times, that live with the chickens and will sleep in the coops during bad weather. Those 2 actually hang with the flock. None of them has ever harmed a chick or chicken. The ferals were trapped and fixed. They are all well fed and cared for. Why would they kill a chicken?

I was not saying it's unnatural for them to bury their poop. I was saying having them roam around outside was unnatural seeing as how they are an INVASIVE species. But clearly, you don't care what other people have to say, so now I'm done with this thread. I can't handle rude, unreasonable, selfish people.

Yes they do. Mine use the litter box in garage access, or bury somewhere in my yard. The cigars that I do find around belong to the Raccoons, opossums, and skunks that are plentiful in my urban neighborhood. There is also some scat left behind by coyotes. I do have to gather rabbit scat (goobers:gig) to keep my dogs from munching on those.

For all the peeps that are not in favor of cats being outdoors, here is some interesting reading of a successful program. I rescued my ferals (ones in my avatar) living creatures, and put them thru the TNR, at my out of pocket expense. Should I have ended their life:idunno,,,
BTW the TNR program was adopted here in USA, from the UK, where it is successful.

I do like TNR I wish it was offered in my locality.
