STRICT RULE no pitbulls Period

Mom has already said "no". So now its time to go look elsewhere. Not that I mind pit bulls, I've got a pit mix, and he is just a sweetie. Like most everyone else stated though, the husky, that would be a HUGE problem. My son adopted one from our local animal control, and he was just ought of control, to say the least! Beautiful as he was, he was never trained! My BIL took him and he ran away to many times, needless to say, he went back to the shelter. I say a BIG YES to adopting from a shelter, first and foremost, those babies need a home, or else they will be put down. Second they have such sweetie pies there, just go take a look, and you will see! Please keep us updated on your choice. Can't wait to see him or her! Good luck!!

in my oppinion pit bulls period are not bad. But as it always seems to be - your mom has a bias so it seems pits are out with you till you are out on your own !

I've loved them since i was 17... But didnt get one till last year ( I was 24 and just bought my own house) and now I have 3 pit bulls and 2 american bullies ....

If you like the look and your mom hates the breed try the american bulldogs. they are pit bull like but not as hyper IMO.

I own pits and Crosses, but I wouldn't want to have a husky-pit cross for the simple reason that you are going to have a humongously strong dog with a big play drive, be so intelligent that he could sit across from you and play checkers.... and be so energetic that you would have to constantly be training for a triathlon to get him enough leash time and exercise.

Both breeds husky and pit were bred for different purposes, and the only Pit crosses that I am 100% confortable around are shephard-pitt and boxer-pit. Combines the best of both breeds without a lot of the negative.

Now, regardless of the dog you get, any large breed dog needs training. Lots and lots of training. If you get a large breed dog who is male, you need to always establish the alpha in the house. Having a large dog is a huge responsibility. I believe that every breed has it's place (its what they were bred for after all) but too many people get a breed because they like it's look regardless of what its natural instincts are. There aren't many bad dogs, just owners...

I would go with your moms wishes for now, and possibly volunteer at an obedience class to figure out what breed you may like and pick up pointers on how to train yours. Who knows, many of the people you meet there will have many many breeds, and you'll probably bump into a breeder.

I agree with Boyd. A Pit/Husky mix is going to be a dog that needs a LOT of attention and TRAINING and exercise. Most importantly Mom says no regardless of her reasoning and that's the end of that story. If you're looking for a big dog that is more mellow and laid back maybe a Dane (short life span) or St Bernard (grooming) would fit the bill. Another suggestion is that if you live on a farm you avoid prey dogs. We stupidly bought a Beagle/Border Collie mix from the shelter. Herd dog with a prey drive....there's a stupid combination. I adore this dog but he cannot be trusted around animals period.

You have far more chance of getting struck by lightning than killed by a dog, for heaven's sake.

I have read other statistics elsewhere that do not agree with DogBite.org, nor does she site sources. She also sounds politically motivated.

Let's not turn this into a breed bashing thread and get it closed. We are trying to advise a child in an even handed way and not be hateful about anything. Your post was not necessary or true.

I recently took ownership of our neighbors husky, who was running the neighborhood and causing lots of problems. When I talked to them, they told me that she'd had puppies with their male dog who happens to be a pitt bull. Those puppies were so sweet, and listened very well, unlike their Mom who didn't listen so well

The father is a very nice dog, who also listens well. It very much depends on the owner of the dog. We have had Dixie (the husky) for probably 2 months, and she is absolutely wonderful. She fits right in with the rest of the gang, and since I've worked with her just a little bit, she too listens. Although, she is an EXTREMELY high energy dog and I can tell you that a tired Dixie, is a happy Dixie

If you don't have enough time to exercise a dog like that, or to keep it's mind busy with good things to do, you will have problems. If your Mom doesn't want a pitt, even if it is a mix, just accept that, and move on - it will be much better that way. There are so many dogs out there that need homes... Why don't you go to a shelter and give one a home that might not have a whole lot of time left? Those puppies will find excellent homes, a shelter dog might not... Just a thought

Those are larger prey driven dogs, unless you have the funds to do alot of training classes, these may not be the right puppies. I don't allow dogs larger than the kids in weight, yes a smaller dog may algo bite them, but the ability to knock them over and bite is reduced with a smaller pooch.

Your mom's house, her rules.

My mom got a rescued pit pup. It grew into the best dog ever. Every time you would go some where. If he went with you. He wouldnt let you back into the house until he checked the whole thing for intruders. He sat and slept with the cats. Even groomed them.. He never hurt any one.. Not even his pet bunny. My mom had a rabbit that was potty trained that ran around the house to..

RIP Spud the pit
I miss that dog. He was the greatest ever..

Now on the other hand. My mom now has a BLACK LAB. And he has killed many many animals. Raccoons, cats, rabbits.. Bit people.. Now he is registered vicious dog. After being around this lab. I dont like labs any more.. But I know its not the breed its the dog. I know its not how he was raised by my mom. But most likely how he was treated before she got him..

I have had Pitt Bull/ Labs. My first Pitt Lab was REALLY GOOD but he got hit by a SIMI truck, my 2nd one was a pain in the rear end.
I wouldn't say it's the breed, it's individual but Pitt Bulls do have a bad rep.

Well, If you lived closer to FLorida, I would let you have one of our pups, free.
