Stupid Neighbors Pit Bull (update 2nd neighbors dog attacked person)

If some one else's dog came onto my property, trying to get to any of my "whatever" that resides on my property, and then growls at me !??! I'll shoot to kill that dog the FIRST TIME. Does anyone on this site remember the word "LEASH", even inside yard?

When I was a teen, my sister had an old-time sized (larger) PomPom, and our Dad and Mom had this rule for that dog -- if you take the dog, you take the leash, attached to collar on the dog, before going out the door, because Pedro would DASH OUT and RUN DOWN THE STREET. In the heat of summer/bitter cold of winter we really didn't feel up to chasing that dog!

I've told my family and my closest friends to bring their dog's leashes/kennels with them to keep their dogs safe from harm, or keep them home. There are no other choices.

Protecting myself/my property (family/animals/ground) comes before some one else's muscles and teeth shooting target of a "pet" !

Enter cats or anything else the same way.

It's difficult to know what chickens are listed as. It is pretty vague. In some ordinances they are listed as pets and others listed as property. Livestock is mostly the hoofed animals.

Local ordinances say that property damage, threats to pets, property, or people as reason to shoot or poison offending animals if on another person's property or invited onto the dog owner's property. example:I can kick a neighbors dog on his property if he invited me there and his dog attacks either me or my pet accompanying me.

Oh the audacity, he went to my parents house later today (whom own my land) which borders his to ask them if they would pay half the cost to have his land surveyed. My dad was less than cordial and told him, "Sure I'll pay to have your land surveyed! "Do you want money for a fence to keep your dog in too?" He then asked the man several times if he was drunk and told him to leave. Sigh if he were a decent neighbor I would show him for free.

To kick all, a new neighbor moved on the other side of my house and they have guess what, a pit bull with 6 or 7 puppies.

Country Freedom: I hear you, yes cats can be trained easily to be put into a harness and taken outside too on a leash. Our own cats are leashed trained. They don't even use the litterbox often because we take them to a pile of sand at the corner of the yard to do their buisness. But, yes this keeps them from being hurt or harming other people's property.

I sure am sorry that happened. I must say though, that the fact that it was a pit bull doesnt mean anything. Any dog that size that wanted to eat chicken would behave the same way, as well as seeing a stranger with a pipe. I am just glad that everything went peacefully. Most places though, its fine to kill a dog that behaves that way. By the way....do you not have a fence? How did the dog get on to your property?

I tend to agree that the issue is 90% the owners. I know a sweetie pit bull. She belongs to an Ayurvedic massage therapist & wears a pink halter. Gentle as a kitten.

Way back when, I worked at a really busy animal hospital in LA as a receptionist. There was a REALLY strong correspondence between the way a dog behaved and the way the owners behaved. Just tended to be a little more out in front in the case of a dog. Since then, I've always watched what the dog is like. If a dog bites when you're back is turned, be careful in your dealings with the owner! Most of the exceptions have been when a dog is new to a family.

Another thing I saw working at the vet's -- dog owners formed a pretty standard bell curve on the nasty-to-nice scale. With cat owners the curve was truncated on the nasty end. Dogs will put up with a lot that cats won't.

I have several chain link dog kennels where it rammed the door evidently for a long period yesterday until the latch piece turned inwards. I had to use a wrench to loosen and re-adjust as I couldn't move the latch by hand. Most dogs shoo off pretty easily. This one seemed aggravated that I interrupted it. If it would have been my 6 year old nephew or 12 year old niece walking out there it would have attacked them. Usually from what I've seen with my own dogs (former dog owner) they don't defend territory they are not familiar with.

Tealady: The type that own this dog think of them as children, not dogs that need discipline. It will not come to them when called etc.

Seeing that ambiguous pit bulls get blamed for many things they don't do, have a whirl at this. Are the dogs in question even pit bulls, since it seems to matter to some people. There are a few different breeds, commonly known as "pit bulls" there is the American Pit Bull Terrier, and then there are a bunch of breeds that people think are pit bulls, that actually have no relation to them.

You should go talk to your neighbors, make sure they know the severity of what happened, and that you will NOT tolerate any dog being aggressive to you on YOUR property. Pitbulls have a high prey drive, like all terriers. The entire terrier group was bred to kill small furry things. They need to be carefully controlled around such creatures. However, human aggression is a major flaw in a dog. Pitbulls were bred specifically to be able to be in a fight and have a human safely intervene. Human aggression should not be tolerated in the breed(s).

You should go talk to the people with the pit bull puppies. Doesn't sound like they are particularly responsible either. Let them know that you have animals around that you won't tolerate being harassed (in a hopefully nice way).

You are so right. 9 out of 10 times it is the owner that makes the dog what it is. I had an American Red Nose Pit Bull growing up and it was the biggest baby in the word....my sister's toy poodle attacked him one day and Taz ran for the hills.

He was however very protective of me.

As for a dog in my yard messing with my chickens and charging me showing the pearly whites...I would have done exactly what your dad wanted to....in a second!

Oh My Goddess!! How TRUE that is!!!
Same thing goes for their kids too.

The entire terrier group was bred to kill small furry things.

I replied a while back to a post where the mom's Yorki went after the birds...

You hit the nail on the head, lemur...Responsibility rests with the animal's owner...

Actually the pit bull was originally bred to take on hunts to take down bears and wild boar. That why they are such a strong dog with extremely strong jaws. It has only be in recent(last 40-50) years that they have become one with the term fighting dogs! Still, all the more reason to take every precauton with them or any other aggressive dog.
