Stupid Neighbors Pit Bull (update 2nd neighbors dog attacked person)

This post caught my interest because of what happened to my son and I this weekend. We had returned home from shopping and I was reaching into the bag to grab the bags. Something caught my attention and I turned to see a pit bull running full speed at my son. He saw it too and yelled "Mommy!" I dropped the groceries (breaking things in the process) and ran for him picking him up just as the dog reached him. At that point, she stopped and wagged her tail, but wow, it was scary! I put my son inside and tenatively tried to read the number on her coller. I called but noone answered. The owner called back 15 minutes later and was upset that I hadn't kept the dog. When I looked out she was still in my front yard, so he asked me to hold her collar until he could come get her. I didn't!

My mom called Mrs. White's granddaughter. Apparently she has mild Osteoarthritis. It broke her hip, dislocated her arm and cracked some vertebrae. Another neighbor heard her screaming and saw the dog dragging her across her lawn and beat the dog off with shovel while his wife called the police. The hospital is having a time working on her because many of the bites are very deep and near the broken bones.

The owners came out and grabbed their dog and ran it to their back lot trying to patch up their fence and even claimed it was not their dog that did the attack even though 3 people witnessed it.

I feel so bad Mrs White I've known since I was 5 and she still sends Halloween candy and Christmas presents to my brother and I long after we reached adulthood because she still considers us kids. I'll go visit in the morning. I truly hope she will be ok. She is 89. Please have her in your prayers or good wishes.

This isn't the jerk that has the chicken killer. These folks moved in about a week ago on the other side of my house and I feared I would have to deal with them too because it seemed vicious and had been chewing the flimsy fence they put up for it.

MirandaMommy: That is very scary. I'm glad nobody was hurt.

I have known some pit bulls that are very sweet dogs it really just depends on he condition they were raised in and if they were abused. Many even fighting dogs love people but hate other dogs. I will hold Mrs. white in the light and also I hope that the dogs are ended humanly because they sound very dangerous.

ITS not because its a pitbull its just the way alot of dogs are, I have a 12 yo pit that wont hurt my chickens, cats pugs or even day old pups and kittens he paces the floors when a animal is in labor and kisses(licks) new babies hes a love bug but unfortinately he problely only has a couple years left and we wont get another pit due to ignorant peoples thoughts. Dont forget some roos can be nasty too

This really hurts my heart and sinks my soul to the bottom of it's depths! How dare they try to escape prosecution like that!!! I'm glad that people witnessed the attack and I'm glad that she is alive and will hopefully make short work of getting healed and back to her home. I can't believe that someone would act like that!!! It's the equivilent of a hit and run. If it was my dog, which it wouldn't be because my dog wouldn't be loose, wouldn't have puppies because mine are always fixed, and wouldn't be aggressive (I'll bet this wasn't the first time something has happened with that dog).... BUT, even so, I would have been the first to KILL the dog! Especially if it was mine! We had a pit/akita mix for 2 years that could not get over her shyness of men.... we had her euthanized. It was the responsible thing to do. Even though she never attacked or bit anyone..... it was a matter of time with her because of her problems. You can't hold the entire breed responsible... and her problems were from her sire's (Akita) side..... but some individual dogs should be euthanized. This is certainly a case where this is true.

I certainly hope the owners are held responsible for this! It hurts me that this will be another story that helps to destroy the breed. I really wish that you had to pass a test to own a pit bull..... after all, I can't drive a Semi-truck without special lisencing... it should be the same way. Too many of the wrong people out there owning dogs, of all breeds.

::sigh:: so sad

Again, people cannot comprehend that all dogs, like roos are hard wired. They do what entertains them and if your in the way of what they want, they will move you, regardless to the consequence. Perhaps she wouldn't bite a soul, sux bad if your the first one she does bite! Why chance it. I would get a paint ball gun, when it comes to your yard, shoot it and mark that dog for AC! Also it will sting like mad and send it away. Keep your AC involved and do not drop the ball when it comes to that woman who trivializes the situation. Ask her how she would feel if you came over to harass her dogs, like her dog does you!

IT IS THE BREED!! When was the last time you heard of an 89 year old lady being attcked and viciously mauled by a poodle? or a cocker spaniel?
That doesn't mean with proper training you can't have more control over them, but how many times after these vicious attacks by pits do you hear the owner telling the world on tv "my dog's never....".
And a good 50% of these were so called properly trained dogs.
I have a German Shepherd. I would NEVER assume she wouldn't hurt someone. I tell people all the time, "she hasn't bitten anyone...........YET" so keep your distance and be respectful of her on her territory. And to my wife and I she is the best, loving, timid, and mindful dog. YOU don't want to come through my gate unannounced though. You may be the FIRST.

It is emphatically not the breed. It's the training and socialization. Pit bulls aren't even a breed, they're a type. They get the rap because they've become the dogs of choice for drug dealers, gangstas and wannabe tough guys who don't train them properly.

I really hope this does not turn into a BSL post as the real focus here should be on the fact that a member of the BYC is having problems with the nieghbors dogs, which happen to be pit bull types and that the poor old lady next door was just viciously mauled and is now having to endure a painful recovery at the hospital and is probably very scared now.

The dogs in question need to be destroyed! No doubt about it. The people who allowed their dogs to do this need to be punished! No doubt about it! They are BEYOND irresponsible! Denying it was their dogs and trying to cover up for it is deplorable!!!! Makes me SICK!!! I want to make a comment about people, but I would most likely have to come back and change my post due to complaints.....so, use your imagination, I'm sure you can figure it out :|
