As the owner of many of "those" dogs (Boxers, Staffordshire Terrier, Great Danes), my experience has been otherwise. They have been categorically loyal, gentle, and good-natured. Yes, people can abuse animals and make them vicious. Toyotas can be driven irresponsibly, but the answer is not to ban Toyotas.

Not sure who said it but they are mistaken if they think a Pit Bull isn't a reconized breed in AKC the proper AKC breed name for the pit bull is

Staffordshire Terrier

In most MI shelters they are put down if they come in.

Still praying for Mrs White

If you want to argue about the dogs start another thread. This is about a specific case that Talos321 is involved in and now the attention is also on Mrs. White.

Our dog, Tuna, is a sweetheart. He loves us so much, and he's a very good, even tempered dog. However, we have discovered that he has a problem with strangers. Turns out that last year the neighbor kids had been messing with him and taunting him, and all the sudden he doesn't like strangers anymore. He is a pit bull, and doesn't have a problem with people once he gets to know them/when we're home. But ever since the neighbor kids messed with him, he has a major problem with them. We got a shock collar for him (electric fence) and until we get our chain link fence fixed he stays in the house and is let out with a muzzle on. This dog is very good natured, it's not because he's a pit bull that he doesn't like strangers. I've seen labradors that hate kids, and hate strangers. Any dog can have personality problems, and being breed specific is unfair not only to pit bulls but to dogs in general.

The dog in the OP was not being given credit for its full capabilities. The lady needs to understand that just because her animal is a sweetheart to her does not mean the dog won't behave differently when outside/away from its home. We had a rude awakening with Tuna when he snapped his chain and held the neighbor boy at bay (did not attack) but although I feel that the kids are stupid and to blame for that stuff they are still children and I can't risk harm to them for the sake of an animal. I will say one thing that is breed specific to a pit bull. When they want something they will do anything to get it, especially chicken nuggets!!!! This does not make them mean, or bad, or deserving of euthanasia. It just makes them the breed that they are. No dog is violent or mean by breed. Sometimes it just happens, other times (most of the time) it's because of humans. Don't blame the breed, blame the deed!!!

When I was a child we owned a chihuahua that was very protective of my mom and she allowed it, thinking it was cute. One day the next door neighbor came over to pay for an outside light he had shot out with a BB gun and her chihuahua ran out the front door and bite him. He then ran back in and hid under her chair. The police came and arrested her dog and took him to the police station for a 10 day rabies hold (we didn't have a facility aka pound). They discovered he walked through the bars so they took him to the local vets, lol.

Our neighbor 2 houses down had 2 Pit Bulls that my friend and I use to dress up in baby clothes and push around in a baby carriage, NEVER NEVER did they attempt to bite us or act aggressive toward us during all our man handling we did to them and believe me we did man handle them poor dogs.

Moral: It is Not the Breed but the owner/handler that allows and accepts the behavior and does not train their animals what is acceptable and what is not.

From Wikipedia:

"Pit Bull is a term commonly used to describe several breeds of dog ... The breeds most often placed in this category are the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier ... the term is vague and may include other breeds with similar physical characteristics, such as the Perro de Presa Canario, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino, Alano Espanol, Japanese Tosa, Dogue de Bordeaux, Cordoba Fighting Dog, Bull Terrier, Antebellum Bulldog, Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog, American Bulldog, Boxer, Valley Bulldog, Olde English Bulldogge, Renascence Bulldogge, and Banter Bulldogge..."

That's why the breed-specific or type-specific bans have been ineffective. The legislation is based on ignorance, and it's left to bureaucrats to define what the thing is.

I simply do not understand how people can just let their dogs roam free. Its ignorant no matter what the breed is. People like that should not be allowed to own dogs. Where I live, dogs dont roam free, its just not allowed, by the owner or neighbors. In farming country, a roaming dog who chases livestock/maimes livestock is shot at first with a warning shot and the owners are contacted, 2nd with pepper shot to warn the dog, 3rd no dog.

Oblio13, I have never in my life seen a mean Great Dane. I just simply didnt think they had it in them. They are wonderful loving giants. I have a very funny story to tell you about a harlequin dane..

I agree with everyone who stated it is not the breed of dog that is dangerous. Some dogs do need "stronger owners" than others. Some owners just don't have it in them, to constantly remain the "alpha" leader.

Three years ago, I adopted a lab/border collie cross who spent tje first 1.5 yrs of his life in a shelter. He was dropped off because he is scared of guns. He is the sweetest dog, ever. Loves my doxies, grooms my cats, ignores the guineas, learning about the chicks. He has his odd quirks and his routine. But....I do not trust him around strangers, if I am home. He will circle around behind the person and nip them on the back of the leg. He has done this successfully a few too many times. He loves kids and will not do this to kids. In fact his energetic behavior ceases when young kids are around. If I am not home, he will keep his distance and bark. I am a responsible pet owner. I take him back when strangers (to him) are here and let him calm down before allowing him to meet new people. He is a sneaky biter....due to the border collie in him. I dont think he is viscious but I know what he will do.

It does not matter what breed a dog is, a viscious dog will be a viscious dog. Granted some breeds are capable of doing more bodily harm than others. Its not the breed, its the owners. If you are a lovey, animal weakling, push over like me...you simply do not need a strong breed dog.
