Summer 2012 Granny "Square" Swap (sign ups closed)

I love those puppies too. They look like my Sadie. I can't believe she's almost 6 months old. She can retrieve the ball now and sometimes catches it in her mouth if I throw for her. She's so loving but right now she misses the other dogs since my daughter left for her new home. She goes looking for them and looks at me as if to ask "where are they?" I am giving her extra attention and we walk the property and play ball so she can exercise and not lay around moping. I really have to coax her to eat. Hopefully this will pass in a few more days. I understand her playmate of my daughters bunch is acting the same way. Guess a trip over there is in order real soon.

I would like to learn how to tat also. I've planned on trying for some time but just haven't got around to it.
I decided I can't miss my swaps no matter what. I'm still going to be hanging around.

Years ago an elderly church lady who was an avid tatter (w/ the shuttle) tried to teach me. I was truly hopless at it.

Gushing about puppies is quite understandable!!!! lol

I am still working on the borders to the summer swap blanket, and the pieced part of the fall swap. And setting up new garden beds, and researching about raising meat rabbits.
I don't even know what a shuttle is. :/
Very cool about the rabbits. I've spent this week trying to get a few areas for crested wheat grass prepared. I got about an a half acre seeded today after clearing parts of it with the ancient tractor we bought. We plan to get 2 calves this spring to raise for meat and the crested wheat grass will save a little bit on the feed bills.
It's not too hard really--it just takes practice. I tat with a shuttle, but you can also tat with a crochet hook. I always have to practice a bit when I get my tatting stuff out, because I don't do it very often. Here is a picture of a practice butterfly. I've ordered some thinner thread for the earrings and hopefully I can start working on them this weekend.

That is so cute! I would love to learn too. Well it's on my list anyway. Just so many things on that list! LOL

Awww I feel for Sadie! At least your DD lives close enough that Sadie can visit with her buddy regularly. How much does Sadie weigh these days? She is so pretty and you're right, the 2 black and tan puppies look a lot like Sadie.

Oops, almost forgot. Here's a pic of the hat I made for DH. I'm not sure I love it but he does so I guess it's a success after all. It is what he asked for.

That looks perfect for what he was wanting! I hate cold ears lol. You can tell him I have hat envy!

I think it looks great, Sunny.

Sunny-That hat is what I'd been thinking of; a basic watch cap. It's what I wear and I can roll it up or down depending on the weather.

Betty-Thank you for keeping us up to date on little Sadie. I expected she'd miss her friends when they left. I agree that it's fortunate that they're not far away. I'm glad you're not giving up on swaps.

I bet you have dozens of hats for that cold weather you get up there!

Yeah most watch caps roll off his head or at least creep up. This one won't do that. It's nice when we can crochet things to custom fit one's head! You all appreciate the effort that goes into these small things. Most folks have no idea what kind of work goes into homemade items. I had to rip this out 3 times before I finally got it right. At least caps are fairly fast. The kids are always asking for blankets and stuff. lol Like I can just whip something like that out in a few days. Well some of you probably can!

I love that hat. A few years back I made some for all the family, since all are in cold weather at one time or another. They block the wind also.

The last time I had Sadie weighted she weighed 45lbs but that was almost a month ago.She will be 6 mo. on the 1st. and she is as tall as a full grown GS already. I am about to get her spayed. I need to call and make an app't and they'll micro chip her at the same time. She was chasing leaves today as they fell off the trees and were blown by the wind. She also chased a couple of ravens away from the chicken pens. Hope she chases the rabbits also.

Maybe when she's big she can keep the coyotes away from the chickens, too.

That's about the size of my full grown female. She is fairly small for a shepherd but the American lines are like that these days. My male is just over 100 lbs but he is from the German working lines. She sounds like she is gonna be a great protector for the chickens! Mine will chase the rabbits but they lose interest after a bit. That's ok with me since I don't want them to have a super strong prey drive. Dogs like that will go after the chickens too. They will just chase the rabbits out of their immediate territory then come back. My last dogs would chase them for miles and miles! It got so we couldn't take them for a walk, they would be too much for us to hang onto if they spotted a rabbit.

If she has a friend she can. Taking on a pack of coyotes is too much for any single dog.

I don't have a coyote problem. At least I never have. Guess I could at a future date. Our property is fenced and I see the coyotes pass by but one has never jumped the fence. My chickens are in a run with the wire buried a foot below ground to keep predators out but it wouldn't keep a coyote out if it was determined. We have a big boy running the neighborhood. My neighbor saw him and said he's bigger than normal. I'm wondering if it could be a wolf. I haven't seen it so I can't say. I was planning on a trip tomorrow to Apple Valley but the weather is changing my mind. It's supposed to be windy and stormy and I don't want to get caught out in the desert. Fom home it's 50 plus miles to what they call 4 corners (where hwy58 and 395 cross) with nothing in between and another 40 miles from there with nothing until you get to Adelanto. It's pretty desolate and there are a few places where there is no cell phone service.

Sadie and I will just have to wait until next week. I want to get some quilting done and I'm still cleaning house after five dogs have gone. She will chase the ball now and bring it back to me so we have fun doing that but she still won't go out on the property alone, just out the back to go potty.
